Diesel oil, different from regular oil?

No offense but diesel ratings are made by people who don't care about bearings and lasting conditions. There made by manufactors who sell parts. Look at the longevity of poliomyelitis and lasting shear factors. Look at your oil for carbons and how long it's clear. Look at your wallet. Ratings are not science but a way to sell oil. :confused2:

I think the most current rating for diesel engine oil is "CJ".

CL-4 is the latest rating I've seen. I tis used in Tier4 engines requiring ultra-low supher fuel and have partical filters or exhaust catalysts. CL-4 has reduced sulper. Synthetics shouldn't have sulpher in them so no big deal.

Like everyone else, we all have an @$$hole and an opinion about which oil to use. I run Mobil Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 in everything I own. I buy it at WalMart.

our local walmart finally started carrying M1 5w40, will try it next change. Do you run it in any gas vehicles?

I must be too stupid to realize what you are trying to say.. Can you expand on this some?

interesting, up until a few months ago, you could still purchase CI.... CL.. havent seen it yet..
CJ was formulated for 2007 and newer DPF equipped on highway diesel engines. The CJ forulation has all but completely eliminated zinc phosphorus.
Theres alot of debate as to whether the removal of ZDDP can/will cause excess wear when compared to engines using CI oils...
Personally, I've got approx. 30 gallons of CI rated oil, I plan on using it all up before going to anything new.

That is not correct the limit is on phosphorus and in CJ-4 it is limited to 1200 ppm down from CI-4 which typically was 1400-1500 ppm. Zinc will typically read 100ppm higher then phosphorus upon analysis. CJ-4 is also for limiting total ash content to 1.0%. This required changes in the additive type and content to allow for a lower total ash formula.

Strange, I thought the ratings were made by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). Although they are swayed heavily by the EPA, most of the ratings are pretty much straight forward and with reason. My wallet wouldn't know a 10w40 from a #2 fuel... so how does that compute with ratings? If they both cost the same, are they interchangable?
