Diesel oil, different from regular oil?

Chris, since you're going to synthetic anyway, I suggest Amsoil 5W30. This gives better flow at low temps while offering the viscosity you want when hot. Amsoil 5W30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil - Best Motor Oil on the Market

I think they also have a 10W30, but with the new oils, take advantage of the 5W or even 0W versions for really good cold start protection.

Hey, I know how frustrating it is to try and explain something to a guys that knows nothing so I am really sorry.

Won't anything other than 10w30 or 10w40 void my warranty?
Also, as I mentioned starting in cold is not an issue. Unless the natural gas furnace in my shop craps out.

I don't think going to a 5w30 or a 15w30 would matter on the warranty. Going to 90 weitght may. I think it would have to be that extreme to matter on the warranty. You may want to check with your dealer on that though. Another brand that has not been mentioned yet is Mobil. There are several synthetic options avaliable from them. Either Mobil 1 diesel engine or the Mobil Delvac. They are fairly common in my area.

Viscosity is a temp rating, not a start up or warm up rating, for example 5 w 30 is 30 weight or viscosity of 30 at 5f in us standards in metric it's of course "Celsius". The lower the number in the first number the thinner the oil at low temp. So I always run 5w30 in winter and in a gas engine the largest amount of wear is done on start up, so I run it also in summer. I would consider a higher viscosity in a climate like Arizona but here in Washington you will have very little benefit to using say 10 w40 keep in mind the higher the viscosity in either numbers require a copolymer addition to the oil, copolymers are a friction reducing additive that happen to coagulate as they get hotter, but can also increase friction in a very tight bearing, diesel engines have very high compression compared to gasoline engines and can have very tight tolerance bearings and running a 5-20 or 5-30 or 5-40 will keep engine lubricated better on start up in temps below 85f ! Rotella is the standard in the truck industry and can go 25 thousand miles in a large displacement engine before changing.

There is no way a company could void your warranty because of the oil viscosity, the burden of proof would be on there shoulders that the oil caused the failure.

I use Mobile 1 regularly...diesel rated...good stuff, recommend. Just find it in weight range you are seeing in manual. A little under or over won't matter. Clearly marked on bottle for diesel. Used it for years.

Good choice, but in synthetic it's twice the price of Rotella. Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Valvoline, are great oils. But if you buy a oil that the trucking industri uses its much cheaper because of the volume of oil used. I buy it in 55 gallon drum for $870 Mobil full synthetic is almost 2 grand.

Ya, I would not use something that the manual does not recommend.
So, just to clarify something. 10w30. 10 is the viscosity on startup and 30 is the running viscosity??? 30 being thicker than 10. So the oil gets thicker when heated???
SAE 30. Is 30 weight all the time???
Please tell me if I'm on the right track.

NO... 10w30 = in winter (the 'W') it has the same viscosity of straight 10 weight, in summer it has the weight of straight 30 weight

Wally world used to carry Mobil 1 Truck & Suv in a C rated oil that is for diesels. It is a different formulation from the regular Mobil 1. Maybe someone here knows if they still carry it. I have been using Rotella T6 from the farm store, so haven't looked recently.

Thanks guys. You saved me from making a big mistake!!!
I found only one 10w30 in the diesel section and it was the dyno house brand. I'm really set on synthetic. To me, the cost difference between dyno and synthetic is a drop in the bucket and it makes me feel better.
Here is a pic of my manual. I see it says cc or cd. I will look for that on the bottles.

We use this in some applications at work. I don't know if it's better or worse than other full syn diesel oils, but we've never had an oil related problem.
