GRS, was it a yellow tab on the side of the fuel filter unit?
(I think it's the filter, mounted off the driver side of the head)

I dont think it was yellow, but its located on the drivers side, a good arms stretch down nearer the cab.

It is by the filter as i recall.

Once you find it by feel, its the only thing that you can pump by hand. Works slick too.

Does anyone have any advice on the changing of the fuel tank sending unit for a 99?
Is it possibly a job I could handle at home?

When I upgraded to a Airdog 150, I pulled the bed off instead of dropping the tank. Was quite surprised how easy it was.

My wifes in tank fuel pump set me back $800.

I should have done it myself, but i was just too busy working those days.

When they gave her a bid of $600 for the water pump, i got out the Chiltons book and took about 45 minutes to do it myself...saved about $450.

My 1994 dodge cummins has a manual bleed device that all i need to do is pump it about 5-8 times and the truck always started right up.

Its a small push lever ....i cant really describe where its located, but its detailed in the operators manual.

It was real easy to prime and restart. And believe me, whey the wife is driving that truck all the time, ive had to use it several times.

Are thinking of the manual prime leaver on the lift pump? Drivers side below the fuel filter, mounted to the engine block?

My '97 Cummins fuel gauge hasn't worked in years and the fuel light stays on. This works out fine if someone borrows the truck as they always put some fuel in it thinking its low.
I always reset the trip meter at the pump, about 400 miles and I'm ready for fuel. It'll go farther but who wants to walk home?

that could be it... dont recall its name, and the truck and manual is at work along with the wife.

cant look it up

I do know that mice ate thru 2 sets of the rubber fuel lines that dodge supplied on that rig, and i had to manual prime it for a few days each time that happened before i got the repairs done.
After the 2nd time they ate thru it, Dodge installed a steel fuel line at their cost (warranty) as it embarrassed their service man to keep repairing it.

Maybe I should have mentioned, this is a '99.
It doesn't spray out, it just dribbles. You need to let the air bleed out.

The advice on how to do this was was from my dodge dealership service.

yep, definitely a difference... you have the 24v with the VP-44 pump.. back when engines were simpler!!. A friend of mine has one with the old P-Pump conversion on it.. what a beast!
Sorry, thought you were referring to one of the newer CR engines.... Cracking lines on those is a no-no.

haha... yea, it takes longer to get my work clotes on than it does to change the H2O pump on a Cummins... Wonder how many people pay all that $$$ to have the local dealership replace it?
