When the "E" model Cat first came out they would shut down with one bubble of air, many would shut down when fueling. doing the hand primer it could take multiple hours to get it to re-fire.
I worked on Class eights I have a small air tank, with connectors on it, and fill it with 120 lbs of air and pressure flush systems to get them to start when they run out.
Many engines will self bleed the new ones run at such a high pressure, 30,000 PSI delivery pressures, to get fuel mileage and huge HP and torque that air in the system can cause huge damage.
Engines use to be able to handle water, in the fuel system without damage Today with the Ford 6.7 the system allows water past the two filters, and when it does it is not covered under warranty. $8,500 to $12,500.
You want to as Cat use to say buy clean fuel and keep it clean, and I might add, never allow it to run out.
On a gasoline engines in the modern car if you run it out of fuel, the pump is cooled with fuel going threw the pump, it will fail soon after. They are made to be immersed in fuel.

Do you have an idea how much that bed weighs? Is it something 4 people could pick up and lift off? Is there just a few bolts that hold it on?

No idea.

Easily picked up by 2, it's just very awkward. I could of remounted it with 3 guys and the wife lining things up.

If I remember q, 2 bolts per corner, drop the spare, and unplug the rear wiring harness.

If I remember, after that it's a retaining ring and unplug the harness from tank, pull it out, drop in the new, put in retainer, plug in, and replace bed. I don't remember if the fuel pump is in tank on the '99, but you will be able to figure out whet you need. Good luck!

Oops, don't forget the 3 screws for the fuel filler hole. (yes I did, thanks for assking)

Would you believe 50k ? ;)
No I wouldn't. :)
Usually the low mileage older vehicles are the first to rot out.

My truck is a 2004 and the fuel pump is in the engine compartment near the fuel filter. They only did that on 2003's and 2004's. Its not suppose to be a very good setup, but it is easy to replace.

Derek is right, here in the NE, you never see an older truck in that fine of shape.

Dave, my father was told that there was a retrofit kit to move the fuel pump to the tank, and the Dodge would cover the cost. Well, until it was in dealership, then they wanted $1200.

Old school mechanically injected diesels have always been bled by cracking the injectors. I'll be doing that shortly on my 6.2 after I get some minor details like the front nose back together.

Seems like common rail diesels should always self bleed as long as the lift pump works, as the injectors do not rely on fuel pressure to open. They open and close electronically, bleeding air off into the cylinders until fuel is flowing again.

And the 02's

Edit; I believe 98.5 thru the 02's did. If it had the VP44, it came with a block mounted pump. Which usually dies an early age.

Replacements from Dodge are a retrofit to the inside of the tank.
