When the "E" model Cat first came out they would shut down with one bubble of air, many would shut down when fueling. doing the hand primer it could take multiple hours to get it to re-fire.
I worked on Class eights I have a small air tank, with connectors on it, and fill it with 120 lbs of air and pressure flush systems to get them to start when they run out.
Many engines will self bleed the new ones run at such a high pressure, 30,000 PSI delivery pressures, to get fuel mileage and huge HP and torque that air in the system can cause huge damage.
Engines use to be able to handle water, in the fuel system without damage Today with the Ford 6.7 the system allows water past the two filters, and when it does it is not covered under warranty. $8,500 to $12,500.
You want to as Cat use to say buy clean fuel and keep it clean, and I might add, never allow it to run out.
On a gasoline engines in the modern car if you run it out of fuel, the pump is cooled with fuel going threw the pump, it will fail soon after. They are made to be immersed in fuel.
