The recent discussions on credit and debit cards, gold and such.....brings up memories of large denomination currency.

I can remember often seeing bills of $500.00 and $1000.00 back in the 50's and 60's. My family was in the farm machinery and truck biz....and large purchases from distant customers was often done with large bills. I cannot remember when bills became limited to $100.

Today?.....a $100. bill is as big as it gets. (IMO.....The governement has done a good job of keeping a paper trail on our activities.)

Does anyone remember bills larger than $1000.00 ?

As a kid I think I saw a $500 bill. I doubt it was $1,000. My grandfather collected coins on a small scale and he might have had a $500 bill. I cannot imagine how else I would have seen one.

Certainly have not seen one since. :D

Though I did recently read of a guy who printed a million dollar note he tried to use at WallyWorld.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

My father has kept a $500.00 and $1,000.00 bill for many years now - never did see a 10K bill though!

From what I understand, these denomination bills ($500 up) now have a far greater than "face value" value as collector pieces/bills.

It was not unusual for people to buy a car with large bills...

When I sold a Model A years ago... the buyer paid cash and one of the bills was a $1,000

With today's non-existent deposit rates... I would keep one if I had it.

Back in the 70's when interest was many times higher than today... it didn't make sense to hold onto it.

I think the reduced cost & increased sophistication of couterfeiting may have put an end to those large bills.

The largest Note (as we call it here) is £50, the equivalent of $77.

I don't know if there was ever a larger note, but there probably was.

Back in the early '60's when I was in about the third grade, we went on a class trip to the bank. I remember the bank manager telling us to stop moving around so he could show us a 10,000 dollar bill. He stayed several steps away from us little kids and inside the vault because he didn't want any of us to have an "accident" involving the bill. We walked single file past the door of the vault peering in to see it. We didn't understand why he was making such a big deal out of a piece of paper.
