Going back to the 50's and 60's......it would have been hard to find a vehicle (tractor, car or truck) that could not have been purchased for under $10,000.....and most good vehicles would have run $1000 to $3000.

I cannot immagine someone coming through the door today with $50,000 or more in CASH...and $500. and $1,000. paper bills. But.....folks did that...back in the days. (on an inflation adjusted basis)

Back then....you couldnt trust a check.....and would gladly accept cash or a Western Union telegram for money. Or, perhaps you knew the guy....and trusted his word.

Just yesterday.....they would not let me pay for a haircut with over a $20. bill.:laughing:

My, how things have changed. :confused2:

As a kid I think I saw a $500 bill. I doubt it was $1,000. My grandfather collected coins on a small scale and he might have had a $500 bill. I cannot imagine how else I would have seen one.

Certainly have not seen one since. :D

Though I did recently read of a guy who printed a million dollar note he tried to use at WallyWorld.:laughing::laughing:

I saw the same report on the Evening News in regards to the Man trying to cash a Million Dollar bill. When the Walmart store refused to cash it, he became augmentative. He didn't understand why the store wouldn't cash it because he was buying items there. The broadcast even posted a picture of the individual.

I was at the gold and silver pawn shop from "pawn stars" on tv this past weekend and they had a $500 bill and were asking $1000 for it and also a $1000 bill they were asking $2000 for. They were also selling 1 oz silver pieces with their logo on them for $60 and people were buying them!

Ya, banks used the $10,000 bill for interbank operations only. They never saw the real light of day... or so they say.

I bought one of the Trillion dollar bills from Zimbabwe on ebay.. for like $2.50

There was a time back in the 60's when IIRC the Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas had a display in their casino of $1,000,000 in $10,000 bills.

The "war on drugs" eliminated the larger (over $100) denomination bills. Governments wanted to force people to carry large suitcases of cash or use electronic transfers... both of which are used to track money.

My folks and their older relatives all used large denomination bills years ago when they saved cash up for large purchases. Some people that lived through the depression era didn't trust banks and it was easier to keep $500 and $1000 bills under their mattress than keeping a pile of smaller bills. :)

I recall a trip to the grocery store when I was paying for $192 worth of groceries with two one hundred dollar bills. The cashier entered the tendered amount using the 00 key instead of the 0 key, so the amount tendered appeared to be 200,000,000.00 instead of 200.00. She immediately called the store manager, I assumed for the key to void the incorrect input.

No. The first thing out of her mouth to the manager was "I don't think I have enough change in my drawer for him."

If only she had a few of them million dollar bills. I would have taken the rest in small bills.
