$500 and $1000 bills

My brother and I were just having this conversation, why they don't make $500 and $1000 notes anymore. I believe there is a $500 euro note. Why not here? A hundred bucks doesn't go all that far these days. Heck, if I need gas and groceries it's gonna be $200 or more. Seems like it might be time to increase the denomination. They're too busy making dollar coins that no one wants and pennies that cost more to produce than they're worth.

I saw $500 and $1000 bills. Early 60's, I watched my Great Grandmother hand out her family's inheritance. I was 6 or 7 and thought they were impressive!

I was in disbursing in the Navy in the early to mid 70's and we paid in cash to the tune of about 3/4 million a payday. Never got anything larger than $20.00 bills when we went to the bank, so I never saw one of those larger bills. I need to dig out that picture of me leaning back on a millon dollars and show the kid. Picture was taken while we were at sea, underway, in the middle of the night, with the doors of the office locked. Each of us took our turns getting our picture taken with the money, then locked it back in the safes.

We used to have 25 cent bills and $4, $25 and $500 bills but they were phased out long ago. Our $1, $2 and $1000 were a thing of the past from 1 to 2 decades ago roughly but we still have $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills and of course our loonie and toonie coins. I can remember using $1000 bills to buy a car. Our new $100 bill is a polymer material...feels downright weird compared to the paper bill but is supposed to be almost forgery proof (so they say) and last 2 1/2 times longer than paper but apparently they will shrivel up and shrink if exposed to high heat like on a house radiator...now when they say your money shrinks, the aren't just speaking figuratively! The new polymer $50 bills are coming down the pipeline this March and the $20, $10, and $5 bills are expected late next year.

Hey, why doncha throw a handful in the dryer and see how they fare after going through a wash cycle? I have been quite impressed with the durability of the paper bills even after washing. I wonder how the plastic will deal with dryer heat levels.

Apparently they withstand boiling but who knows what temperature it takes before they start to shrivel. I sure ain't gonna sacrifice a $100 bill (let alone a handful!) to find out!

I see "bills' over $1,000 every month!:(

Actually though, I have only seen 2 $1,000 bills, my dad had them and where given to him for our moving expenses I think it was. Mid to late 60's

I once had a 500USD bill.

In common current circulation are 500 Euro bills, which are about $700. And
yet, like Canada, there are no 1 or 2 Euro bills. And Europeans have
essentially given up on Euro cents. They still exist but are disdained, as
many proprietors just round to the nearest .05.

In the US, we need to get rid of our zinc pennies, since they cost more
than 1 cent each to make, and the $1 bill needs to go, too. Unless/until
we dump the $1 bill, our $1 coins will never be successful.

Once upon a time, we had 1/2c coins, as well as 2c and 3c, and even 20c.

I am with you all the way with the 1 dollar coins now that they are sized so that they are not confused with quarters. But I'm not ready to give up on the penny just yet. I guess I like counting my pennies rather than giving them to buiseness' that round up.

I watched Cajun Pawn Stars where they guy came in with a pair of $5,000 and $10,000 bills with matching serial numbers. They said that Nixon get rid of the large bills to fight the drug war. The guy at the Pawn store offered half a million dollars for them, and the owner of the bills wanted a million.

Who appears on the $10,000 and $5,000 bills from Cajun Pawn Stars?
