New Ford Superduty owners beware (diesels)

/ New Ford Superduty owners beware (diesels) #11
I know there are some members on this site with 2011-12 Ford superduty's with the new 6.7L diesel motor. I am one of them. I cruise some Ford forums and lately there has been a lot of chatter reporting fuel system failures from contaminated fuel.

The consensus seems to be the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) made by Bosch has zero tolerance for water in the fuel. As we all know the Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel sold in the US has zilch for lubricity and if you UNKNOWINGLY get a bad batch of fuel it will have catastrophic failures AND Ford will not warranty the repair. I've read the cost to replace the new motor and fuel system ranges from 12-20,000 dollars.

Guys, be sure to drain the water separator monthly (Ford states this in manual) or more and IF you get the "water in fuel" warning message, shut down the truck immediately and have it towed to dealer. Keep all receipts from your places of fuel so you have some recourse if you get contaminated fuel and I would try to find a fueling station that sells a lot of diesel to lesson your chances of bad fuel.

Some places to read up on this can be found on these sites:

It still mind boggles me after reading this and a few other posts that folks still think that diesel additives are not needed and are snake oil.I have been running a diesel additive since 1999 in all of my equipment, coobie

I understand that the possibility of getting water in fuel is reality. It can happen and all you can do is work towards preventing it. What I find disappointing is vehicle manufactures don't build a fuel system that can handle the low sulfur fuel and sensitivities of water. So when the unfortunate happens, the manufactures say, sorry about your luck, that'll be $15,000 for the repair......thank you very much and have a nice day.

Yup, I run the ford branded cetane booster in my 6.7 as well. If I'm not near a ford store when I run out I at least use power service, and I'm trying the Redline stuff next week. Just another tax on us dirty diesel users that the EPA imposed on us.

As a side note, I run it in both of my tractors as well. Just like I run Stabil in my boat.....the EPA doesn't care about engine life, they care about controlling how we live.

So let me get this straight, you add a bottle of Ford's cetane booster EVERY tank of fuel? I don't know how much fuel you go through but I'll be damned if I'm gonna keep upteen bottles of cetane booster on hand for every tank and when I run out, got to scramble to find something else. I'm re-evaluating the purchase of this truck and may sell it, and then Ford can kiss my ***. I'll be done with being a Ford customer.

I add the Motorcraft cetane booster with each fill-up. Not a problem, just pour in about 4 ounces and add fuel, each bottle is good for about 5 fill-ups. I think all the manufacturers are facing the same problems with ULSD. The real solution would be to get a gasoline powered truck.

None of the manufacturers recommend additives as far as I know ?

I put a bottle of power service in and lost 10% on the mileage :confused2:

If I gained 10% I'd put it in every tank. I think it is a feel good thing, I know I feel good when I put additives in anything, never seen proof positive there was a benefit though.

The ULSD does not have enough lubricity to keep seals and injectors working fluidly. I use a few different additives, including the occasional quart of 2-stroke oil. Keeps the engine running much more quiet and smooth. I would agree that the manufacturers should offer better fuel filtration from the factory, but it would cost you more than if you add it yourself. I added a GDP MK-2 two micron fuel filter system w/ Donaldson filter to my '04 Cummins in about 30 minutes.

The only thing that ever goes into my trucks or tractors is whatever the manufacturer or owners manual states, especially while under warranty. That way if something goes haywire, I have one less item they can use to void warranty. Also, if the manual is followed and you have a failure, whether in or out of warranty, you at least have a leg to stand on.

All true...And one shouldn't have to worry about this kind of garbage on a $55k+ truck.

As much as I wanted a diesel I passed due to all of this garbage...Went with a 6.2 gas instead.

Seems the Bosch HPFP is a problem. Om my VW it's a notorious potential point of failure. Out of all the failures I've read of on the TDI forum only two users used additives.

I use Diesel Kleen in all my diesels, and have since 1988.

Isn't the engine in your V-dub the same size as an injection pump on a Cat 3406??
