Marlin Lever Action Rifles

I have an old Marlin 1894 in .25-20 that was my grandmothers coyote gun. Fun to shoot but pricey ammo at about $60 for a box of 50. I might get into reloading just so I can shoot it more I think it is supposed to have a hexagon barrel but at some point it was 'pipe wrench' re-barreled with a round barrel and the stock and forearm wood don't match exactly but with age it is a little hard to tell. Because of those issues it has about 0$ value but it has been in the family for who knows how long.

I really like the Marlin 94 for pistol cartridges; in 357 it is a fun shooter! For rifle sized cartridge, still prefer pointy bullets in a Savage 99. 300 Savage is a nice cartridge; would like a 250-3000 some day.

Love the Marlin lever guns, I've had two 1894s in .44 Mag. I used the last one to start my sons deer hunting as I could tailor the loads. I finally gave my last one to my oldest son last year as he grew up shooting it. I also have the 39A carbine made in the early 60's, I like the older ones best.

Why not have it re-barreled in a more modern caliber as you don't have a lot of antique value to lose. Take it to a competent gunsmith and get an extimate.

Good idea.....Except.....getting the lever action to cycle a different pistol cartridge may be quite a trick for the smith. I think that the action (and magazine tube) are pretty cartridge specific.

Reloading may be the best answer......and it just may be a valuable enough gun that finding (or making) a hex barrel would be worth the effort.

I've got a Marlin model 336 30-30 in stainless steel, and love it. Great gun.

I just missed out on buying an 1894 classic, in 25-20 a couple years back. It was new in box, unfired and bargain priced. I kick myself for not getting it i'm telling you

Way back about 1960 or so, my Dad had the auto parts store, and Fram oil filters ran some kind of promotion in which Dad got a 30-30 Marlin lever action rifle for almost nothing. In December, 1962, near Llano, TX, was the only time I ever shot a deer and it was with that gun. I really liked the little gun.

But when Mother & Dad moved to Alaska in the Fall of 1965, Dad traded it in on a 30-06 with scope for the moose hunting.

I don't have a Marlin, but I do have a Henry Golden Boy lever action in 22mag. Nice little gun that is fun and cheap to shoot. I use it to control the ground hog population around my shed. Open sights with an octagon barrel.

Henry's are nice and have outstanding customer service. The only reason I sold mine was to buy the 39A.
