I just looked through my files, and my CO2 bottle deposit was 270$. I am unhappy.

Sounds to me like they sold you a bottle at that price there is now way it should be called a lease. Check again as you should be the owner, then again, some LWS dealers dont like to sell and instead give you a 10 year or so lease so they are still responsible for hydrotesting the bottles. That is a kind of rip off because I only paid $50 each to test my bottles that I picked up on Craigslist along with my torch for less than the cost of one bottle and I got 2 oxygen and 1 acetylene. I think I paid $250 for the torch and 3 bottles and then 100 to recertify the bottles. I just swapped out at the LWS with ones he had in stock and paid the testing fee. I dont know who or where he does the test. In cases like that which is what I am used to seeing, no need to buy new bottles because you wont see them again. I guess you could wait for a few hours to have them refill your personal bottles if you wanted but I didnt ask about it.

I would say that the 270 was in lieu of a credit check or as a result of less than stellar credit...because I faintly remember a conversation to that effect IF my credit didn't come back as it should.

Looking at some Chinese made, with I hope American pride all-purpose welders plasma cutters. Any comments would be appreciated. Looking at the forum sponsors for a machine, everlast or longevity ?

I'm having a similar problem. I can buy a new Sig P229 in 357Sig for $949 or a new Millermatic 211 for $989 plus tax. I hate having to make decisions like this.

Sig...of course.

About 13 years ago, I bought one of these over some welding equipment:http://www.magnumresearch.com/IWI_Baby_Eagle.asp

It was in .40 and I have never looked back and never regretted it. Not the most expensive gun on the market, but one of the most comfortable, full frame designs I have ever shot...plus the gun I got came with a life time warranty through the Davidson's distributor.

Mark,

Now that is an interesting assumption/diagnosis.

Are you referring to my credit statement?
I wasn't making an assumption or statement toward you. No disrespect intended toward you either.

I "lit" on the word deposit as you used it. Generally it would say rental charge or lease. I keep 4 or 5 cylinders out lease for my business every year. I usually end up paying about an average of 250.00 270.00 or so for all of them yearly.

But sometimes, as I have talked with a lot of customers over the past few years, these welding companies shoot a high dollar amount because they don't want the hassle of running a credit check on a small customer, particularly in this down economy, credit is tight. This is often referred to as a "deposit". They will still charge a yearly fee on top of that. The fees you said sound similar to what some other customers have told me that they wanted to charge IF the credit report came back negative OR they refused to submit a credit statement to the company. It is also what my TWO different local companies do including Airgas if that is a problem. IF you have a deposit charge, it is made to guarantee a return of the bottle or a compensation of a potential loss of the cylinder to the company. I have no idea if that is what happened or not, but it is a possible result. I wasn't assuming anything, but explaining a possibility why it was so astromically high. Either way, if it is or not customer gets worked over. I was NOT trying to state you had bad credit...if that is what it sounded like, my apologies.

I just don't know about the weekend warrior buying a plasma cutter. The up front cost is staggering! If I had it to do over again, I don't think I'd buy one. For what little aluminum work I do, a skil saw, saws all, and the Ellis get me by just fine. Like I said, I just don't know about buying a plasma cutter.

Now that I've bought a plasma cutter, and to use at home as a weekend warrior, although at work use them quite a lot, I find one extreemly good to have at a good price for the end product. I use mine more than the torch. Mine is an Everlast, and so far has held up exeptionally. Not only for aluminm work but plain junk laying in the back yard. Well worth the investment.

Do you have an air compressor? You may already know this but you'll need one for a plasma cutter and you'll need a good way to dry the air. I have the PP60 and personally I like having a plasma cutter. I've used OA to cut metal and while it works fine I find that the plasma is much easier and more accurate. I've used mine to make small pieces that I just don't see how I could have done it with OA.

But I got the plasma because I have a nice vise, lots of clamps, a Lincoln 255 MIG, a stick welder, and lots of grinders/ saws. For me I would make sure I had all the basic tools first (a good vise, 4 1/2"grinder, plenty of vice grips, a bench to work on). I would look at the inverter stick welders, they look like a good entry welder that's not going to leave you wishing for more power down the road.
