yep.. the camp owner says he's had to track too many bleeding out hogs , and maybee not find them from people shooting them with 30-30 and not killing them.

IMHO.. it means they made a bad shot.. not that the cartridge was light.

since I was forced to take a 30-06 on that hunt, I ruined the ribs and one shoulder on my hog as I blew his front right quarter section out in a cross shot from a rear angle shot.

it was about a 70yd shot... the 30-30 would have dropped him , maybee without so much meat damage... (loss ).. whatever.. was the camp rules.. I guess they figured you might have a 400# boar walk out with a 3.5" shield on his neck and didn't want to take any chances of a price russian boar running off into the oods to die next week... etc..

There isnt much comparison between the 30-30 and the other two, except for caliber. The. 308 is a more efficient cartridge than the 06. If hand loading, one can achieve nearly the same ballistics with the. 308 as the 06. The big plus is the shorter action throw and smaller cartridges. This is why the military made the switch to .308 in the late 60s for sniper rifles.

It compares to the 06 better, basically it's equal to the 06 with 150 gr and 165gr past that the extra powder in the 06 takes over.

one more thing to add about 308 since it is a currently in use military round ammo can be had cheap.

so for .308 and 30-06.. I should be looking at about same knock down power, trajectory flattness / drop and recoil.. etc?

close anyway?

I have a "new model" 760 carbine in .30-06 with a plain Leupold 4X scope. I've had it for over 40 years. The "new model" 760's have a floating barrel. The forend and the bar the forend slides on are not attached to the barrel. The sling is attached directly to the barrel with a barrel band in front of the forend. On the "old model" 760's the steel tube the forend slides on is attached to the barrel, similar to an 870 shotgun.

I think this is one of the neatest rifles I've owned. However, it kicks like a mule because it is so light.

The .270 is a nice all around cartridge. I've got one in a Winchester 70 Featherweight. Flat shooting with decent power. The only real drawback to the .270 is limited bullet choices in commercial loads and the long cartridge length.

it does feel quite light.. the slide moves like butter, yet has a crisp action. lugs ont he bolt look good.

can't wait to send some copper clad down range....

When I was in the USMC in the 60's, we had both M1 Garands in .30-06 and M14's in 7.62 MM (.308 Winchester) We were told that in military loads, the 7.62MM is equivalent to the .30-06. Both the M1 Garand and the M14 were designed to fire only military loads.
However with modern rifles and ammo the .30-06 can be considerably hotter than the .308., but then you have the kick factor I mentioned in my previous post.
