so for .308 and 30-06.. I should be looking at about same knock down power, trajectory flattness / drop and recoil.. etc?

close anyway?

yes, really close.

308 was developed from the 300 Savage. Both are nice rounds. When the 300 Savage was developed, it had same ballistics as a 150gr 30-06, but in a lever action. At the time, it was considerably more powerful than 30-30, and much flatter shooting, since the Savage rotary magazine could accept pointy bullets...

The 308 was based on the 300 Savage, with minor improvements to make it feed in machine guns, as well as a little more velocity. Again, the 308 matched the 30-06 in 150gr military loads. But, in a shorter, lighter cartridge.

In commercial loads, the 30-06 has an edge. And, in 180gr and up heavier, 30-06 has the edge. But, the 308 has been very successful, even with Snipers(USMC), and in 1000 yard competition.

The 300 Savage and 308 really took advantage of much better case design.

308 advantage over 30-30
- pointy bullets; shoot flatter and higher velocity
- Much improved case design, capable of much higher pressures and velocities
- Available in stronger lever actions; re Savage 99 and Browning BLR

308 advantage over 30-06
- Shorter case/cartridge works in short action
- Little less recoil
- For military, carry more ammo for same amount of weight.

I've never hunted in .308

hows it compair between the 30-30 and 30-06?

thanks

I have a 30-06 Remington pump I have had for 20 years. Very smooth gun and it's great for follow up shots. The one problem is the recoil. I have a 30-06 Browning bolt action and it delivers much less recoil to the shoulder than the pump gun.

I have a 760 in 6mm, wasn't a very good shot till I got this gun, fit me perfect, think I went from being average shooter to expert with it  :D Son had 270 in a 700 Rem. and really liked it, it was in fire, now think he wants another 270  :confused2:

As a lefty I have shot a lot of pumps and semi's and still own a few. I liked the Remington pump because it chambered the "long 06" style cases and my hunting buddy shot a lot of deer with one in 30.06. Now, most of my deer hunting is done with a .270 bolt or a .308 lever. I don't think anything I hit with either of them knows the difference between them and a 30.06

As you may already know..the the .270 is a 30/06 necked down to take .277 bullets. My favorite deer round is a 25/06, which is a 30/06 necked down to take .257 bullets.Because of the surplus of military brass(30/06) after WWII the wildcatters made many wildcat rounds from 30/06 brass.
Included also are .280 Remington(7MM Express),.338/06,35 Whelen ect.

I have used a model 6 in 270, the model 6 was originally just a fancy 760 action was the same but it has a cartridge head imbedded into the stock and has cut checkering. I love this rifle and cartridge easy to carry and accurate. After years of use it still functions like it did 30+ years ago. I do not remember when I bought it. I have a 1&3/4 -5 original Redfeild on it, the low power scope is better then iron in my opinion for fast close shots like I get. it puts the anchor on deer most just hit the ground with their legs sticking up, never had one travel more then a few yards. I use a 150 grain remington bullet at near max velocity.

aside from bullet diameter.. I did notice how close it was to a 30-06 case.. :)

It is the same case, I used to take surplus military brass and run it through a 270 die, for the amateurs out there reloading it is a good idea to trim anneal and ream the case.
