308 was developed from the 300 Savage. Both are nice rounds. When the 300 Savage was developed, it had same ballistics as a 150gr 30-06, but in a lever action. At the time, it was considerably more powerful than 30-30, and much flatter shooting, since the Savage rotary magazine could accept pointy bullets...
The 308 was based on the 300 Savage, with minor improvements to make it feed in machine guns, as well as a little more velocity. Again, the 308 matched the 30-06 in 150gr military loads. But, in a shorter, lighter cartridge.
In commercial loads, the 30-06 has an edge. And, in 180gr and up heavier, 30-06 has the edge. But, the 308 has been very successful, even with Snipers(USMC), and in 1000 yard competition.
The 300 Savage and 308 really took advantage of much better case design.
308 advantage over 30-30
- pointy bullets; shoot flatter and higher velocity
- Much improved case design, capable of much higher pressures and velocities
- Available in stronger lever actions; re Savage 99 and Browning BLR
308 advantage over 30-06
- Shorter case/cartridge works in short action
- Little less recoil
- For military, carry more ammo for same amount of weight.
I've never hunted in .308
hows it compair between the 30-30 and 30-06?
thanks
