Cougar killing horses

Didn't hear that on the news. Still not confirmed in NB. Some hair samples maybe in Fundy park.

Last spring 1 was hit by a car in the Annapolis valley not far from Middleton, the dnr had to finish it off. The man who hit it was allowed to keep the carcuss to have it mounted.
Here they are also protected, but, I for 1 would not hessitate to insert a 150 grn counter wieght behind the shoulders if given the chance. The way i see it if it is in my yard I just might be in harms way. Enough said.

Where abouts are you in SE IL?

I have relatives in Marion. My great uncle said he saw a cougar about 40 yrs ago near Lake of Egypt in south central IL.

We are about 15 miles west from the Wabash river, 5 miles East from the Embarrass (pronounced Ambraw, why I don't have a clue) river. About 45 miles SW of Terre Haute, In. 20 miles NW of Vincennes, In. 10 miles south of Robinson, Il. 5 miles west of Flat Rock, IL. and if your not confused yet we are close to Villas, which consist of an Amish general store. We are a little rural.

I am sure we have a viable population of Mountain Lions. An immature lion was hit by a car a couple of years ago, the picture is on display in the local barbershop in Robinson. There are pictures of them caught on game cameras. The neighbors that used to live north of us had a couple of little boys who were playing in the creek bottom. They came running to the house in terror saying a monkey man was watching them from a tree. The kids said it jumped from the tree then cleared the creek in a single jump. I am pretty certain they saw a big cat, thankfully the cat didn't attack.

You can freely shoot them if you see them attacking your livestock. You just can't go hunting for them.

Today, as my wife and I were out for our daily walk, we were stalked and charged by an immature Holstein bull that was roaming freely. I bet I would get in more trouble for shooting it to protect us than you would for protecting your horse.

Black bears swim the Mississippi from Arkansas to Ms then back again every year, I don't see why a cougar couldn't do it up there where the river is smaller...

Sometime last year there was a Mountain lion hit by a car in Connecticut. It had a radio tag on it from the Black Hills of South Dakota.

According to GFP here, a male lion has a territory of 150-200 sq mi. They have a open season on them here every year with a limited total culled. Each kill has to be reported to GFP as soon as shot.

They travel very quickly from place to place to establish their new territory. The Connecticut cat had only taken 2 years or so to get there....pretty impressive.
