Lying between the studs in my old house is a hammer and level i left behind when I installed the new bathroom. Looked for them for an hour or so gave up and finished the job with another set of tools. I had sheetrocked over them and remembered when all was taped and ready for paint. Still there, I couldn't bring myself to tear out the wall for an old hammer and cheap level.

Not exactly a tool, but it still kills me thinking about it....

I coach number 2 daughters girls softball and keep my glove which I used when playing High School ball on the top of a 5 gallon bucket of bright yellow softballs in the back of my truck. My wife takes the truck and my number 1 daughter to the field for her practice and calls me to ask if I had anything in the back of the truck because the tailgate was left open.

Yup, a bucket of yellow balls and my glove bounced out....she only traveled a few miles and we drove up and down that road 6 times and never found a single ball or the remains of the bucket. I can only imagine what it was like for the guy behind her when all of those balls came bouncing down the road at him/her.

Till this day, when I drive down that road, I am always looking into the gulleys to spot a yellow ball or some clue of where they fell out. I had that glove for 30 years

I worked in a Chrysler plant back in the 70's. We built a lot of cop cars. The line workers simply LOVED to put pop or even better beer cans into the nether reaches of cop cars. So much so that that the production supervisor's were constantly on patrol for it. Never heard of anybody doing that to a civilian car. Those cop cars were awsome, big V8's, holley carbs with bores so big you could stick your hand down it.

I'm in the midst of a semi- rebuild of my 87 GMC dump truck. Its in a building that has no lighting other than a light tree and an open gargae door 25 feet away. Also dirt floors.

So I spend at least 2hrs of every Saturday walking around the truck, swearing and muttering about the tool that I need and can't find. Since I don't typically leave my tools there (very moist enviroment), I have to pack them in and pack them out. This allows me to keep a pretty tight inventory on the tools that I will be using for each task. However as soon as I bring them in and use them once, I'm on and endless mission of finding them again.

How many of you have done this...

Put a pencil or pen down, only to try and find it a second later, and it's not there. Re-trace ALL of your steps, check every surface, and have no luck...

Only to realise later that it never left your hand, or that it's sticking out of the corner of your mouth....

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. 30 years ago I spent a day in the woods cruising a woodlot. All the data was on tally sheets in an aluminum clipboard. As usual I opened the cab door, set the clipboard on the roof of the truck, took off my cruisers vest to hang it behind the seat, climbed in and drove down over a mile of very rough logging road. At the gravelled town road, I turned right, and went another half mile to the paved road. Within a 100 yds the nice, smooth paved road had a big, wide curve to the right. In mid-curve I heard a tremendous clatter, and stopped. I backed up and discovered my aluminum clipboard in the middle of the on-coming traffic lane A little extra centrifugal force sent it flying from the roof, but 1 1/2 miles of rough bouncing never moved it. I wouldn't want to try it again.
