The worst one I saw was a guy on the next stall shoot his brand new High Point and the whole slide jumped 15 feet down range.:(

the best reading 2 links I found were:

rec.guns FAQ: III.C.2.q.7. Are Sig Aluminum Frames Weak?

and

Sig rust & frame cracking? - TheFiringLine Forums

both appear to be in excess of 10ys old.. couldn't find much newer info on the subject using various searches.

I'd almost have to say it's a non issue / snipe hunt.

either it happend a few tiees and was statistically insignificant, and fixed.. or it was a percieved problem, with rare instances of it occuring.

i have bought a new gun, upon the first time fireing it, the hammer broke. I sent it back to the factory for free servicing... got it back 2 weeks later.. cost me nothing.. gun has worked flawlessly for the last 20ys.. was not a sig :) I've since collected many models of guns from that manufacturer... with no other issues...

good gun.. had a defect that was fixed... end of story..

I'm betting the sig issue is of similar style..

As I wrote...this was in the early 1990's when I found this out. Apparently, it was significant enough (at the time) for the Baltimore County cops to replace their Sigs. I have no idea what they replaced them with.
So, no...not a snipe hunt (especially if you buy used guns, which I have).

not really an issue .. just don't buiy any broke guns.

I almost exclusively buy old guns.. stuff usually 50 - 150 ys old.

I'm my own shop and warranty and problem fixer.. so I look over every 'tool' I buy or own.

no sense in buying a broke tool ( and a gun is a tool to me.. etc ).

if I pick up a gun with a cracked frame.. it ain't coming home unless i'm buing it at parts price for a slide and grips..e tc..

Just in my recent research in the last day or so, I did hear about frame failures during the testing for the military's replacement sidearm back in 1980's. Just reading more right now, they are taking a bit of a hit to their rep. some government agencies are cancelling contracts etc

Supposedly that was one reason for eliminating Sig back then, they said the failures only occurred outside of the required life cycle standard of the test, but that it did happen somewhere around 30,000 rounds maybe ?

Actually all the entrants failed the first 2 rounds of JSSAP testing, they had to lower the standard twice. Sig did pass the final standard but Beretta was chosen, probably because it had be in the running for the full term of the test where Sig came in near the end.

I'll tell you one thing they (Sig) have the ergonomics down pat, pick one up and they feel so nice. Though the slide/ barrel do seem high compared to other pistols, especially with the beaver-tail on the 226 scorpion I looked at.

I guess about half of my firearms were purchased used. I was always OK checking out revolvers, but haven't seen too many gun shops that let one take down a semi-auto.

Apparently, I struck a nerve when posting that info about Sig frames cracking. That wasn't my intent at all, gents...
