It runs very good and drives as well as it runs!! Adjusted the throttle and now that stays, the choke is junk. Oh well. Got the pto switch to work too!

Okay, took the trans filter off today, drained the trans and axle, had ATF in it.... And also started to remove everything from the dash/console. Got the plastic dash off, along w/the wheel and all the switches!! Have to take the ignition switch out and maybe a few other things, and unbolt the 4 bolts and take it off!! Then later this week start to paint! No pics yet, sorry for the wait, I'll get them on as soon as i can!! Hopefully getting the last little bit of stuff i need for the time being tomorrow from JD.....

Well, I got the console off today, took everything else apart inside there that i needed to, and cleaned the back rims up. Also, did not get my parts today. I went ahead and started painting the dash piece, and other things, the knobs turned out great, and so did the seat washers, they were pretty bad. I might have put a bit too much paint on the dash panel though...

Okay, today I figured out that the left rear has no shoes at all, and got what I needed faxed over to the dealer. Also got some more stuff painted, and 'm in the process of finding a tach/hour meter in one that will fit in the dash.... I dont need an ammeter at all?? I have to do a tiny bit more sanding on the fenders, and they should be ready for paint. Also straightened the grille out a little, but it is still about as straight as a snake. I think its one of those "snap in" deals, when it snaps in its straight, I guess I'll find that out later, and finally, I took the pto pulley off, and I think it, and the whole clutch system need new bearings, but I wont bother for now.....

Well today went okay, got almost all the parts I needed, the shoes are on order. Put oil in the axle, overfilled it.... Got my filter, oil, choke cable, washers, and diagram. Also organized some parts and got pretty much everything painted black that i need, except the grille. Hopefully i'll get a white paint marker tomorrow so I can do the letters and stuff on the dash. Enjoy the pics!

Thanks!!! Founod out the backing plate on the left side is junk, but weve had a "nos" one on the shelf for years, and the linings on the 2 shoes i have are coming off, very very small tho, im not too concerned. Also got the latch that goes under the hood painted, and the grille. Basically i have everything black done. Put my Chevrolet bowtie on the grille.... I took pics on my nikon, so i dont have any to post right now.

I'm seriously impressed if you really painted all the letters, etc. on the dash by hand. That dash looks very professional. Like a NOS part that came from the factory that way.

You are going to have one very nice machine.

Hi I am new to this forum and found this thread because I am also in the middle of a 317 project. I picked up the tractor off CL last week. The guy I bought it from had bought it minus engine and had found a Kohler 20hp magnum but thats as far as he got.
I have been cleaning it up and doing a little painting as well as trying to get the engine mounted up. Everything apears to line up except the right side motor mount hit the oil filter. But i heated it up and bent it to clear also the exaust that was on the motor is totally wrong and the 317 exaust is gone so I have to figure that out.
I need to get it mowing soon as the grass here is about 10" tall and my 110 is also down and in need of a new motor after 30+ years of faithful service.

Thank you!!! Yes, that is all by hand!!!! It took me about a total of 30 mins, with 2 coats. I got the new backing plate on today, cleaned up the nuts on it aswell, they are tricky to put on. Also replaced a cotter pin and clevis pin on the brake rod, and forgot that I had put the originals in my brake drum!! Looked forever for them and had to laugh at myself.... Just waiting on shoes, then I'll push it outdoors after I remove the wiring harness, and give it a good pressure wash, to get all of that oily crap out of the frame. And i started to paint my lug nuts and center nuts, even though the socket will destroy the paint anyway....

BTW, is there anywhere I can get a complete wiring harness??? Besides John Deere?
