I seem to recall somebody coming up with an alternate design for these GM electrically heated gas actuators.

Been a while, so I don't remember the source, but the new design did away with the gas portion - if these aftermarket ones are still around, they've been around long enough to validate "better reliability" claims.

Just wanted to toss that out there as an option, esp. if the OE ones are now stupid money, out of stock.....

(One of the original selling points of the new actuator design was "If you just sunk your truck in 3 feet of snow, do you want to wait for the gas to heat up ?". I don't expect much snow down your way Soundguy, but this might be a consideration if you have to deal with water crossings).

Wishing you a speedy diagnosis, Dave.

report:

ok, the 4wd fuse in the cab by the driver door was good

the ATC fuse under the hood was good.

obd 16 pin plug only has 5 connections in it.. 2,4,5,14,16
thus no way to ground #13

am going under the vehicle for a look at the xfer case to see if I see dangling wires or anything

You should have walked into the Dodge dealer instead.

I had a '04 GMC company truck many years ago and the 4WD died exactly when I needed it the most. It was a sensor or control module on the transfer case.

I never had so many issues than when I drove that truck. My Dodge had more miles on it and was older and still to this day gives me no grief.

I'll never own a Government Motors Corporation vehicle for as long as I live.

Let the flaming begin! LOL Ha Ha Ha

more report:

ok.. crawled under.

man.. what alot of wire plugs down there.

nothing looked cut, or unplugged. i jiggled each connector and actually reseated the ones I could reasonable remove and reconnect.

got in the truck for a looksee.. I don't drive it.. so had to get re-aquainted.

looking at the shifter buttons, when you turn ign on, the 2h lights up orange, and the neutral lights up red.. none of the others come on.. no auto, ho 4hi, no 4 low.

tried the manuals procedure to shift transaxle to neutral by ign on, setting parking brake and holding 2hi and 4 lo for 4 seconds.

nada.

take it to the mechanic?

edit:

did drive it 5 minutes.. and DID see a svc 4wd lamp come on inthe msg center.. then went off to tell me i needed washer fluid too.. :)

I think this is called POSI-LOK Not sure how they spelled LOCK, LOC, LOK etc. It gave you a handle inside and a cable to an axle accuator.

Got a Y2K GMC Yukon XL 2500, 39000 miles and about 4 years ago the "Service 4WD" dash indicator lite began coming on, and often when that happened the buttons on the dash range selector would sometimnes go on or off. My truck has been doing this for 4 years now, did some research online and most of the hits says there is a cold soldered joint in the dash pushbutton assembly that triggers a malfunction signal and I get the "Service 4WD" indication. Yet mine has never refused to go into a certain range when I hit the button. Not sure if this helps of not. But my "Service 4WD" lite can stay on all day, or maybe for 5 minutes.

Given my experience, I would say the dash panel range selector needs replacing on mine. But I only drive the truck 1200 miles a year...not worth fixing.

Had that problem with my 2005 Chevy. The Dealer replaced the encoder motor. Warranty took care of it so I don't know the cost.
