Deerman 75: We want that 7018 to look like Shieldarc's sprayarc MIG weld he posted. If you get it like that we will allow you to put a tack weld on it to keep it from sliding off the plate. That is what a welder told me years ago describing his welding "so slick he had to tack weld it to keep it from sliding off the pipe"

Years ago, you could tell a good 7018 weld as the slag would peel up about 2-3" behind the arc and just fall off leaving a clean weld. I dont know what they did to the flux now as it rarely does that anymore except maybe a little bit on cap passes. Back 40 years ago, Atom Arc (now Esab owned)was the premier weld rod brand for iron powder electrodes and even a filler pass would peel up the flux and only require a light tap with a welding rod to dislodge it, now Lincoln and Atom Arc both need a power brush to get them clean.

Problem was I found that even at 60 amps I was burning through 1" x .062 square tubing like I was using a cutter. (1/8" 6011 rod)

The 1/8 is too big, drop to a 3/32 rod and lower the amps more. 6011 is a high penetration rod also, you might try a low penetration rod like 6013 for the thin stuff. Switching the polarity to electrode negative also gives less penetration.

Anyone with suggestions on the reflections coming in from the back would really be helpful. I stopped early because I did not want to have an eye problem.
I think your helmet / hood is too big. I read your post earlier this morning, latter I went out to the shop and did a little welding. I have 48 lights in the ceiling of my shop, and I could not see one light in the back ground with this welding helmet / hood.

It was not the reflections of the other lights it was the reflections of the arc itself that I am concerned about. Are there different sizes of hoods/helmets? My head is a 7 3/8 hat size which not large is certainly not small either.

The arc must be reflecting off of something. I know if you see anything in your lens except the arc it can be very annoying!
I wear a 7 1/4 to 7 3/8 depending on the hat. This morning I really paid attention to any light, or anything inside my Pipelinner hood that could / should bother me, nothing! It fits real tight to the side of face, my head blocks all light from reflecting on the lenses.

Annoying I can live with I am concerned about the safety to my eyes aspect.

Not a pro welder, but I have some of the same reflection issues. Usually when I am too lazy to put on my leathers and weld in a white t-shirt. Also seen it when I weld near a white drywall wall. Just have to find what it is reflecting on and reposition or cover up the surface.
