Actually that 100% mark up on the drill press is not that much compared to furniture, etc. It does pay to shop at HF.

No I have not heard back from Sears yet. I wrote to Sears on Saturday. Assuming that they took President's day off, today is the first "work day" since I wrote them. If I haven't heard anything by Thursday (that's 72 hours) I plan to write them again. I'm also considering letting HF know that Ponde Rosa appears to be buying their products and reselling them for extremely high profit margins.

What he's doing (along with Sears) just ain't right...

I'm amused by the guy who sells HF coupons on eBay.

As I visited the site today a questionare came up.
And I took the chance to take the survey .I liked that it had a whole box to explain what i thought and I did just that.I told them i thought it was discusting how they would do this or allow it to continue once they were ''notified''.
They chose to remove the review fromt he tool review section even though it wasnt written with to much anger it seemed.
I also enclosed an email as they had asked so they could contact me. im not holding my breathmand apparently some people seem to think this not only morally normal business practices , Its how things are today. Basically I think people want to live in a dream world.
I guess Im just a picky shopper..But this is in a way like ticket scalpers also.

If I remember correctly, Kobalt is made in Chile.
I'm seriously thinking of replacing my toolboxes and set that I've piecemealed together over the years with a new, unified set. And since Craftsman/Stanley aren't what they were, I'm seriously thinking of heading down to Lowes and coming home with a new Kobalt set.

I agree with many here. Care must be used in selecting Craftsman tools. Some are fine, others are junk.

I was just re-organizing my tool chest, and sorting through my combi wrenches, seeing wich duplicate sizes I'd get rid of, wich to keep. I noticed a couple things I'd like to share.

I pulled out one Craftsman and it had a poor finish, looked like some of the cheapo no namres i also tossed.

Noticed several others that were very nice quality, highly polished. I like the high polish for 2 reasons:

They are easier to wipe down when done, and they just look more like the toolmaker "cared".

I also noticed a few SK wrenches, same issue as above, some were much nicer.

Lastly, I noticed a few "oddballs" I've picked up over the years, names like "Billings", and "Walden". Walden tools were made right here in Worcester, Massachusetts. Long since gone, but the tools live on.

My best 1/2" drive ratchet was made by Steven Walden right in the same building I walked into about 20 years ado to buy it. If the mechanism breaks, I'm out of luck. So far that has not been an issue.

I think some of our tools we gripe about are not just tools, they are our history, anecdotes, and heirlooms. How many of us can probably point to a tool in there shop, and say "That belonged to my Dad, Pop, Pa, etc.", or say "That was the first tool I bought with my own money", or maybe there is a whole story behind how it came into your hands, "Bought that 8n back in '75, and this pipe wrench was in the tool tray, been with the tractor ever since."

Indeed, many of us may have already thought about who will care for our tools when we are gone. Is this offspring of mine "toolworthy", or will they just toss it in a yard sale. Do they KNOW how important these tools were to me??? Will they care............

I remember when Sears won a patent suit against the guy who invented the quick release mechanism used in Sears ratchets. Sears claimed that the design was obvious or some such claim and the courts found that argument valid and gave the inventor nothing. Leaves a sour taste about Sears and the idiot court every time I use the quick release because it is a clever design. Some of my non-Sears ratchets require that I smack them to get a socket off.

I will probably date myself but 40+ years ago Sears had an "affordable" tool line that they called "Companion". I don't recall what the warranty was but I do remember as a 13 year old kid they were within my budget for tools to work on my motorcycle. I have long since given those Companion tools away as they were replaced with mostly Craftsman hand tools (and some power tools). I have not had a problem getting tools replaced and have had some unexpected positive exchanges, such as a 1/4" Craftsman ratchet that they no longer carried was replaced with the top of the line one and a 25' Craftsman tape that had been down graded to Sears was also replaced with a tape of my choice. I Like Harbor Freight for the specialized, use once type of tools that are very cost prohibitive at other suppliers. Bill C

The guy worked for Sears at the time of invention.
