Schweiser, I was on the 20% diet for almost a year before my heart attack. In the hospital I kept asking myself what did I do wrong. Later when I read Dr. Esselstyn's book he address my specific problem. His patients could not lower their cholesterol enough (150) until they decreased fat intake to 10%. His patients that did this had no cardiac events the ones that did not had cardiac events like I did.

I can't recommend 20% fat in the diet when it failed me miserably. Apparently I'm not the only one.

"Almost all experts agree that reducing fat intake to less than 10% of calories consumed will help mightly in achieving low cholesterol levels." - Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. Md - Prevent and Reversing Heart Disease p63.

I can't take a risk on making another mistake. I was mad at myself for not knowing this information before my heart attack. I could have prevented it. I hope this thread will encourage others here, or at least exposed them to the knowledge, that heart disease prevention and reversal exist. At the least, if they survive an episode, they know there is hope, there is more they can do.

The lifestyle change is sustainable, I have been doing it almost a year. Doctors need to challenge their patients and not be scared they will loose business.

What would you tell a patient who says "I have had a heart attack and never want another"?

I surfed into this simulator in the last couple of days.

LBM: Body Weight Simulator

You have to have Java on your system to run the program.

The program is a bit complex which is good and bad. The program takes your gender, height, weight, and other metrics. Then you can specify that you will now eat X number of calories and/or exercise at different rates. The program will tell you how much weight you will loose after N number of days. You can set N so you can see how much you will loose in say 180 or 365 days. I think it will take a target weight and tell you that it will take X number of days to get to that weight doing the specified diet and exercise.

Later,
Dan

Don: Have you settled on a substitute staple(s) yet?

Meaning, most people primarily eat "meat & potatoes", whether it's steak & baked potato, hamburger & fries, etc ... What is the bulk of what you eat now?

My lady tries to always keep a big bowl of left-over rice & something (we call it a concoction :)) in the fridge all the time, because I myself don't like to cook & sometimes get home wanting something immediate so I can just eat & get going on other stuff I want to do.

Interesting question. My wife and I were trying to name one or two staples but there are more. Most of what we eat have the following in it:

breakfast and deserts - are made up of mostly oatmeal and fruits.

We eat all sorts of beans - black, lima, kidney beans, soy, pinto, lentils, blackeye, split peas, etc

veggies - carrots, potatoes, onions, celery, peas, tomatoes, peppers(all sorts)

grains - brown rice, whole grain pastas, quiona, couscous, bulgar, whole wheat flour products and corn tortillas,

greens - brocoli, kale, spinach, salad mixtures

Fruits - grapes, bananas, blueberries, apples, oranges, peaches

Milk substitute: low fat or nonfat vanilla soy milk

condiments: ketchup, maple syrup, fat free dressings, pepper, variety of spices.

In central Texas all the restaurants insist on bombarding veggies with fat, either bacon, butter or oils. Which restaurants do you go to?

What about meat? Are you on any statins?
