john deere - Presentation nouveau membre, John Deere 303 Alsace

Above is a link to a photo on a French site showing the same tractor, model from the injector side (mines not clean like this one).
Engine casting number on starboard side is 302299 - 11 with a triangular image beneath (not a JDL as on the gearbox `houseing where L10051L is shown). Cast sump. Cast aluminium rocker cover, CAV pump with A736/800/6/2100 and re-order quote 3390. Also R5312 NF (which could stand for Norm Francaise ie French Norm). Serial plate shows 303GD Serial no. 552915.

I could not find any of those numbers in JDparts.com. Engine appears to be a 4 cylinder. Is that correct??????? I've heard of a JD 710 built for European sales but I've never seen one. I tried to no avail to get the 710 parts catalog(#4005) to download so I could look a some parts schematics. I think your tractor is a Lanz.

Hi Jim, yes it's a 4 cyl., looking at pics of the Lanz it used a different engine but same back axle, I think they were built at Mannheim, Germany. Just looked at a pic of the JD 710, the fuel filters and pump appear to be on the opposite side to this 303. Have emailed a co. in Ireland to try to identify engine, cos, SOONER or later will need rebuild.....and they sell engine parts. Thanks Jim. Colin..

Fuel at the pump, so should be OK cranking (I wish), cold here so battery not turning over motor very quickly...luckily ran out of juice outside house...
That is more than likely your key problem. Low cranking speed and lo temperature gang up to prevent compression ignition. Use 5W40 oil to reduce cold cranking resistance. You may get another year on the battery.

I agree. On your tractor the exhaust manifold is on the right instead of on the left. Plus the valve cover looks totally different. But I think the injection pump is on the same side(LH).

Thanks for help U2. Battery new last spring 90 amp/hr, but lazy starter, could be the original, as covered in paint - in UK we used to call these paint jobs Dulux specials - thick paint, usually tarted up for selling - but inherited the tractor with the house. Was a good high spec. tarctor in its time, decent hydraulics but strange hand clutch !!!

I posted the question on another tractor forum I frequent asking to help identify your tractor and some one stated it was a "303" just like you thought. I still trying to locate a parts catalog. Have you ever thought about trying to pull start it?? If so I hope it doesn't have any type of hyd engaged trans.

Update:The manual mentions a pre-heat on the ignition key (pressing in? my French isn't very good).

Further research indicates your tractor has a Standard 23C engine. I hope these paragraphs apply to your engine.

Glow plugs were factory fitted on Banner Lane (UK) produced tractors with the 23C engine from 1959 onwards. Maybe some export markets remained without?
While the Perkins starts much better, I would prefer the Standard engine if I want the tractor for show or playing. It runs much smoother and quiter due to its four cylinder. Engines with a strain number of cylinders will always run smoother. But for work a Perkins modell will be the best. Parts are available through Sparex-UK - are they in the Staates too?- or the major UK Ferguson parts dealer. Look at www.fofh.u-net.com for them.
The 20C engine was used in the TE-F while the later 23C was used in the Ferguson 35s and early MF35s.
