fences make good neighbors , I would be building a fence of my own. How close to your property line is their house?
The problem I am having is with my neighbor that has 160 acres & built their home 10 ft from my 25 acre small cattle ranch. Not only that she dislikes the cows but constucted a shack 5 ft from the fence that she rents to a tenant that has 5 pit bull dogs that love to chase cattle. The sheriff has been very helpfull , we are about to move the cows back to the pasture where the dogs are , any suggestions to stop them from stampedeing the herd or killing the young calves?

Sweet Terry ! - You married a Warrior...so you can drive into dangerous situations...good for you...still be careful though...you love her and that puts you at a disadvantage if things go bad...then , if precious bride is in trouble you are distracted from the task at hand....saving your life...Just a thought.

If I were you, I would send them a Certified Letter expressing your concerns about their dogs and advising them you were moving your cattle and you expect them to keep their dogs on their own property and you will hold them responsible for any harm to you cattle...

Might also include a copy of the statute for your state that allows killing animals that are harassing livestock.

The sheriff has made it clear that we can protect our property ( cattle ) I already killed 1 pit last year, hopeing not to have to shoot any more dogs. letter may be a good choice, or I might have the law remind them again.

Don't know about your state law but Florida property owners have the right to protect livestock from wild dogs and unleashed pets.
I would call the agricultural deputy for your area to handle the problem. If he refuses then I would handle the problem.

RDrancher, your my kinda guy! In reading i was expecting you to say "while turning the tractor the loader hit the shed and knocked it down" but putting stuff on the roof is even better! Like to have you for a neighbor but your quite a distance away! .. . John

Brin, why do you feel you are you at a disadvantage when your wife is along? I have been in a number of disagreements such as this one, and if your right and can prove it! Let it HAPPEN! Years ago we came home one day to find a mobile home hauler stuck in my hay lot with a HUGE mobile home and hauler truck He'd knocked down about 5 acres of Alafalfa hay and put it into a big mud pit. When i saw this all my wife said was "Holy sh*t as i jumped out of the truck and went after the guy. The hauler said he didn't need permission and to get out of his ******way! Needless to say a fist fight broke out, the man was arrested after an emergency room visit for stitches ect. . . When our case came before the judge it was funny to hear the mobile home hauler talk his way out of the ordeal especially being a town justice an a near by town. Well He lost! Judge ordered I hold his truck, New 72' mobile home and moving equipment until i was financially compensated for the damage and the ground was repaired, another fight broke out in the court room and a simple tresspass, property damage issue went big! The hauler lost his privelidge to be town Justice and i was compensated quite a large sum of money.Guess i was lucky, bring the law with you first! Good luck. .. John

A good Friend of ours (my wife and I) had a somewhat similar situation. He lives on a rather busy country road and there was a terrible accident. they called in the medivac chopper and it proceeded to land on top of 2 or his 4 pheasant enclosures with 1000 birds a piece. it sucked the netting into the rotor and crashed to the ground the last 20 feet or so and burst into flames. the fire dept. responded and drove right through the field he had in tomatoes. he lost almost 3 acres of them. Now the pilot and crew were ok. The kids didnt survive the accident, unfortunately, and he lost most of his birds and the tomatoes. the only difference was that he never saw a penny of compensation from anyone for the lack of a police officer assisting in the landing of the chopper which would have solved everything. the saddest part was the loss of life but the kick in the shorts was that, from what my friend said, was that the chopper could have landed in a front yard 100yds closer to the road and avoided it all. sometimes nobody wins.

As I said in my post...I called the Realtor who had rented the house next door and spoke with her and followed up with an email...She called me back yesterday early afternoon and apologized for the fence and said the tenant had signed a lease that specifically required him to get permission from the landlord before he made any modifications to the property and the lease had the survey attached and clearly showed the property he was leasing. She then had the tenant call me...He was very courteous and apologized a number of times and said he would have the fence down and staples removed before night fall..

The funny thing is....the reason he gave me for putting the fence up....He wanted to keep his father in law from driving around the gate on his driveway...He said he would close and lock the gate and his father in law had a small car and would drive over on my property and go around his gate ....Imagine that...wants to keep his father in law out with a fence....

The reason I have never fenced that area of the farm is that it is at the front of the property and that fence would have to be installed right on the edge of his paved driveway which is abut 400 feet long...It would really hurt that property and whoever lived there if I did that since it would prevent any wide trucks from ever being able to drive down their driveway.....the fence would also not be attractive in the front of the property running along a driveway like that and since the edge of the road is the exact property line there has never been a problem in 40 yrs...this was a first...The rest of my farm is fenced and crossed fenced mainly 4 board fence .

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions....this one was resolved peacefully with all parties.

You have damaged that relationship with that neighbor, hopefully you will never need a hand from him or you might get an over-reaction just as you did. The smart thing to do would have been to contact your neighbor directly and professionally, you'd been surprised at how that would have worked. Next and most importantly no matter what, wife or no wife never go to someone's back porch looking for trouble "even the biggest dog in the yard can holler".

I would be inclined to go and check those trees with a metal detector to ensure that they didn't break/miss a staple in one of them.

This thread ended up making me kinda sad.

End up with mixed feelings of sadness and anger for those in the mid south, what an odd, sad, miserable way to live.

Explains Jeremy Mayfield a little bit I guess, could have everything in the world, but just has that stubborn mindset, gotta ruin his & others lives.

Real downer.

If you can't take your wife to go visit the neighbors, why are you living there? Why do we put up with such behavior in this country?

And then a lot seem just proud about that sort of thing.
