I used to be suspicious of renters in the neighborhood. Then one day I was shoveling out the elderly crippled lady's walk next door during a blizzard and the renter across the street (single woman with a young son) sent her son over to help with a cup of hot chocolate for me she had made (Mexican style with hot pepper flakes in it) as a way of thanking me for what I was doing. That is the sum total of thanks I got for shoveling that lady's walk all those winters, but I was touched at the gesture and appreciated the help. I think that was almost the only time anyone helped out with shoveling tht lady's walk.

Guess I'm getting soft in my old age.

Your a good person!!! It goes to show not all good deads go un-noticed...

I am a Land Surveyor, and Brin, you handled the situation perfectly. Its best not to let your emotions get the best of you. It all worked out in the end.

As a side note, I don't know what it is, but boundarys and property can get very emtional for some people. People will get very upset if they think someone is on their property. I've seen it time and again, and it can get really silly with grown men acting like little kids fighting over a piece of candy. Boundary disputes are also expensive and I've been involved in a few. I would say half of the disputes I've been involved really have nothing to do with the boundaries. People have some kind of other personal grudge, and a boundary dispute is just a way to manifest the other personal disputes.

Thanks Dave...I know you are right...I saw my neighbor down the road get in a protracted fight over his property line and it went on for over 3 yrs. It never did get to court buy some attorneys made a lot of money.

Well, I did not detect any hostility in your op but I did detect some need for anger management lessons coming from Moss Road. He sounded like he wanted to get started on one big tear. I think you handled two situations well here.

.

Wow, it is amazing how two people can read the same post and come away with a completely different read of it. I did not see at all in Moss' post what you did.

I live in western KY and I would NEVER drive down a quarter mile driveway to a rental house to talk friendly with the renter if I didn't have at least some idea who lived there. Much less get aggressive or demanding with them. That sounds like an ideal place to cook meth. The fence strung up haphazardly also sounds like a meth head. When I read the first post in this thread it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck and I was thinking "please Brin don't go over there". Anybody reading this please realize that this is a dangerous behavior changing drug and too many people are on this stuff.

Came out of the local Lowes store with my wife late one night and a guy yelled at me across the parking lot and came running over to shake my hand. We stood talking for a while and my wife stood there smiling at him until his collar slipped down and she saw the barbed wire and 'other things' tattooed around his neck. Then she quietly slipped away and got in the truck. After we shook hands again and he left I got in the truck she asked me who he was and said that he was sure glad to see me. I told her his name and that he worked with me for a while and that I thought he was still in prison. When she asked what for and I told her murder she thought I was joking until I told her that he was the one that helped another guy bury the body of someone the other guy had killed with a hammer. Drove the hammer thru his skull and into the brain. Only problem was the guy wasn't dead when they buried him. Those are the kind of people involved in meth. And they are the kind of people who would rent a house a quarter mile off the road and put up a fence when they were so doped they didn't know what they were doing.

Oh yeah, the guys wife shot and killed him about six months later after he nearly beat her to death a couple of times.

Love a good ending to a story!!

Being former LE, I have seen fences built similar to this to thwart a possible raid, The fence usually directs you to the front of the residence, which leaves you exposed. Add dogs and it gets even more "fun" .

I think Brin acted prudent in this situation, even if I may/may-not have went to the house, each man has to make the decision for himself at the time considering the whole situation.

yep all of us old former LEO's are sitting back thinking "this could be a crack/meth house" "this fence don't look right, might be a funnel" "wouldn't be prudent" "danger Will Robinson" ... my alarm bells were going off on the first part of the post.. I guess different people look at things differently, but I darn sure was on "red alert"

When we lived back in the good ol' city we had a house in a neighborhood that was going over to rentals. The houses were small by today's standards, a few decades old and with people wanting a McMansion or at least a McMcMansion, our neighborhood was not popular with the two income professionals. The two income professionals were buying up the houses and turning them into rentals.

The irony was that the city is very snobbish. Nothing bad ever happens there....

The were various issues with the rentals over the years but one of our biggest was the guy next door who drank heavily, had parties, played loud music, had fights in the yard, and set off fireworks at 2:00am. He owned a bar and would often come home with a friend and both of them would be drunk. Quite often they would argue in the front yard over some odd thing or the other. Sometimes they sounded like they were married. :D

The city PD non emergency phone number was on the fridge and speed dial.

One night the wifey called the PD about the noise. I think I was working late that night. The dip s...t in dispatch told the wifey to go over and talk with the neighbor about the loud music. Ah. No. He had been visited often by the PD about his antics and we did not need to go tell him again. The only way I would have gone over there was with a pistol. Tain't NO WAY I was going over there with a pistol. If the s...t hit the fan I would be in deep doo doo even if it was a justifiable shooting.

I should have called the PD the next day and had a talk with the dispatch supervisor but I did not.

Eventually the neighbor got a girl friend with a preexisting family and he settled down.

There are times to talk face to face. Then there are times to get the law involved. Getting the rental owner involved can also work but that is another story. :D Getting the rental owner involved, as Brin found out, can work wonders.

Later,
Dan

Kinda scary thinking similar situations when responding on the fire engine... It's pretty common to have to stage till LEO's arrive and the scene is safe. Sometimes though, driving up dark driveways at 3am for a medical call. Or, going to a fire call, not knowing about a drug house and associated chemicals...

Update on my problem with the next door tenant and the fence he put up on my property...

I just talked to a person that lives on the other side of that tenants driveway and he told me he suspects there are drugs being sold back there...he said he stopped trying to count the number of cars that drive down that driveway everyday - just too many to keep up with...So my guess is ...it is a meth lab or some other illegal drug trade. My next step will be to contact the County Sheriff and let them use my farm to conduct surveillance...if they are even interested..
