Ahh this is a good post always learning something on here. Would you want to ride the clutch a little after breaking it free to help polish the flywheel to help keep the clutch plate from re-binding?
I would if it were mine.

I belive he said it slipped into gear. If you don't force a manual transmission it will often go into gear fairly easily at low speeds, heck I've done it many times with no harm to the transmission.

Tell that to any potential purchaser of your tractor some day and see if the offered price goes up or down?

I too have made"clutchless" shifts in a manual transmission pickup. Seemed there was a sweet spot to it where there was no grinding or binding. Had to do this out of necessity not want to. Never tried it on a tractor though.

You ripped a manual transmission into gear with the clutch still engaged?

Drove a Jeep standard tranny for a couple months without a clutch. Not that hard to pop it into low gear (do it quick and firm) and then work it up in gears by coordinating engine speed with tranny speed.

Started my youngest son driving the 8hp Wheel Horse around the yard on his own by just firmly popping into low gear. Stopped it by turning the key off. He was in 7th heaven.
And that '96 Wheel Horse is still mowing lawn and plowing snow to this day, as I sold it to a guy and can't buy it back. :)

If I were slipping the clutch to polish (or as we used to do if needing to burn off some oil from a leaky seal), I'd use a higher gear. Less likely to do more harm and more slipping. Shouldn't take much slipping at all to polish, so maybe just normal use and propping the clutch in dis-engaged position between usage would work just fine.

Repair shops staff often find chunks of gear teeth in the bottom on manual transmissions. And/or the leading engagement edge of the gears milled down. One has to wonder how that could occur?

My bet would be on folks grinding gears or forcing gear changes without clutching. I understand what this must sound like, but think you would feel differently if had seen it done. Absolutely no forcing or grinding whatsoever. Slipped right in and out without a hint of noise. I certainly don't promote clutchless shifting, but would do it again if clutch was out and needed to get to help.
