dump truck capacity

i'll ask the guy with the truck how big the bed is. this is not really a weight issue but a volume question. he wants $50-$60 to haul it 30 miles. I thought the price was fine but at the time i didn't think to ask about the volume of the dump bed. i'll also ask him about raising the sides to get more volume. it'll cost me probably $20 to get someone to load him so if i can get 3 or 4 times as much as i could in my pickup it would be worth it to me. 60 miles in my pickup is around $14 in gas. do that 3 or 4 times and you're close to even and saving the time it would take driving back and forth.

The other fellas already gave you the "goods" on the load. I am surprised though that you would have to "pay" to get loaded. Around here they'll usually load you just to get rid of it, but you may have to schedule the timing when some one is free, such as at a dairy.

RedHorse, you say 8000 pounds equals 11 cubic yards of manure? Sorry, but if it has any moisture content at all, 11 cubic yards are going to weigh a LOT more than 8000 pounds.

Agree- I should have been more specific as to "time it been out of Cow"

I based the 11 yards on the "Weight of Materials" in the Glover Pocket Reference guide (675 pds yd.)

by the way- a plug for that book. 768 pages in a book about 1" x 2.5 x 4.

Made me laugh about "time it been out of the cow" I did a Google search and came up with the 62 to 55 pounds per cubic foot...thanks much for the plug for the book, sounds like something handy to use for reference.

the owner of the place i'm getting it doesn't have a loader. she says her neighbor has one and will probably charge $20 to load.
this is horse manure. trying to keep up my soil fertility.

Oh, that makes sense, $20 is better than a shovel in that case:thumbsup:

this worked out well. the dump truck guy had extended sides on the bed and he hauled quite a lot. maybe close to 10 yards. the loader guy charged me $35. he loaded the dump truck and my pickup. this stuff is old horse manure and not very wet. what we got barely put a dent in whats there.

Yes, you are right. The books arrived yesterday and it was fun to look through the books. Even my kids got into reading the books. :D The wifey asked what we were reading so I bored her with reading all of the interesting stuff that was in the books.

In one of the End of the World books I read in the 80's, it might have been one of the books written by Niven, there was a part of the story where one of the characters protected and then buried the books that would be useful in the future. I THINK these books or books like them were the ones he saved.

Later,
Dan
