there's an ad on CL for a guy who has a dump truck for hire. The ad says that the dump truck can hold 4 tons. does anyone know what size dump bed this dump truck would have?
i want to hire him to haul manure but i'd like to know the volume of the load he could carry.
is it 3 or 4 times as much as my f-150?

Tons is weight and you might be asking volume. My old Toyota had a bed that was 7 feet long and 3 feet clear between the wheel wells and about 16" tall sides. I held a ton. My Dodge has an 8 foot bed, a little over 4 feet clear between the wheel wells and 19" tall sides. It holds a ton. I am leaving out overall width. Or to think of it another way I hauled 34 square bales in the Toyota and 49 in the Dodge.

Horse compost consisting of manure and shavings could be ton per full sized pickup bed if it has some moisture. It could be a half ton if it has not rained in two months. On the other hand a ton of sand is maybe half full on the Dodge full size bed.

Or to cut to the chase. The volume could be exactly the same as your truck bed. He just has a dual wheel axle with heavy duty tires and springs. Just call the guy and ask him how many yards his dump bed is and do the math on your bed. Black Gold - blackgoldtopsoil.com

I think you are going to have to ask him since the answer depends on the size of his bed. Four tons is not a heavy load so it sounds like he has a small truck. Some of the latest Ford F350 can almost carry four tons.

A cubic foot of manure weighs about 62 pounds wet to 55 pounds dry. At 60 pounds per cubic foot, 8000 pounds (4 tons) would be 133 cubic feet. Works out to just under a 5 cubic yard dump box.

Weight is not the biggest factor when hauling manure in a small 1 ton dump. To make the trip worth while I stand sheets of 3/4 plywood on end. The sheets are well used as this trick works when hauling firewood, and shingles from roofing tear offs. The truck is a Ford F-350.

Randy,

well for sure you can't carry 8000 pds in your 150. To give you a rough idea, 8000 pds equals:
Sand, 3 cu. yds.
Manure 11 cu. yds

Lets say its a Ford F-550, GM 4500. Its typically going to have a 3 or 4 yd body max. If its a "one ton" -F-350- its typically going to have a 2 or 3 yd body.

Exception to this? If the guy is a landscape contractor, a lot of these guys set their trucks up with high sides so they can carry low density loads like brush, mulch etc.

Hope this helps

It sounds like the dump truck in question is like a Ford f-450 or 550 I have one and can legally haul 4 ton of stone I have had 10-12 yards of mulch on with higher sides if that helps ya. I have a 10' long bed and higher sides when hauling mulch.

RedHorse, you say 8000 pounds equals 11 cubic yards of manure? Sorry, but if it has any moisture content at all, 11 cubic yards are going to weigh a LOT more than 8000 pounds.

i'll ask the guy with the truck how big the bed is. this is not really a weight issue but a volume question. he wants $50-$60 to haul it 30 miles. I thought the price was fine but at the time i didn't think to ask about the volume of the dump bed. i'll also ask him about raising the sides to get more volume. it'll cost me probably $20 to get someone to load him so if i can get 3 or 4 times as much as i could in my pickup it would be worth it to me. 60 miles in my pickup is around $14 in gas. do that 3 or 4 times and you're close to even and saving the time it would take driving back and forth.

Yes, and having the truck dump the load where you want it will also save you a LOT of work and time emptying put your truck bed one load at a time.

The other fellas already gave you the "goods" on the load. I am surprised though that you would have to "pay" to get loaded. Around here they'll usually load you just to get rid of it, but you may have to schedule the timing when some one is free, such as at a dairy.

Agree- I should have been more specific as to "time it been out of Cow"

I based the 11 yards on the "Weight of Materials" in the Glover Pocket Reference guide (675 pds yd.)

by the way- a plug for that book. 768 pages in a book about 1" x 2.5 x 4.
Sequoia Publishing: Pocket Ref, Handyman Reference & Engineering Reference Books. Best little book yopu will ever own.

Made me laugh about "time it been out of the cow" I did a Google search and came up with the 62 to 55 pounds per cubic foot...thanks much for the plug for the book, sounds like something handy to use for reference.

the owner of the place i'm getting it doesn't have a loader. she says her neighbor has one and will probably charge $20 to load.
this is horse manure. trying to keep up my soil fertility.

Oh, that makes sense, $20 is better than a shovel in that case:thumbsup:

this worked out well. the dump truck guy had extended sides on the bed and he hauled quite a lot. maybe close to 10 yards. the loader guy charged me $35. he loaded the dump truck and my pickup. this stuff is old horse manure and not very wet. what we got barely put a dent in whats there.

Yes, you are right. The books arrived yesterday and it was fun to look through the books. Even my kids got into reading the books. :D The wifey asked what we were reading so I bored her with reading all of the interesting stuff that was in the books.

In one of the End of the World books I read in the 80's, it might have been one of the books written by Niven, there was a part of the story where one of the characters protected and then buried the books that would be useful in the future. I THINK these books or books like them were the ones he saved.

Dan
