What full size 4X4 truck is made outside the US and imported???

Dodge Rams, being made in Mexico and brought here for sale. I don't know if it's all or not.

GM has a plant in Mexico also that makes full sized trucks, don't know how many.

Last I read Ford was building some engines in Mexico, but had closed the truck plant they had and moved production to Ohio..

I am surprised they idled Volt production instead of just kept taking losses on it; I am eating crow on that one. But I believe it is important that we develop electric car technology, manufacturing process, battery supply/materials chain, and so on.

In ten or twenty years we might be nostalgic for the days of $4/gallon fuel. The developing world is ... developing ... and so is its oil consumption. On the other hand, oil production is flat. In the U.S. we have several different resources we can use to make electricity; coal, nuclear, hydro, blablah. Whether or not they are "clean" compared to dinosaur juice, I don't know; but at least the money from coal electricity stays largely within our country.

Seems few folk have heard tell of the massive Bakken oil field reserves. The US could run till 2041 on those reserves alone. As for electric car tech getting better. Pure bullsh!t . There is no way to make a chemical battery with better energy to weight capacity and be affordable or safe. Stuck with a battery pack that makes up half the weight of the car and carries 1-2 gallons gasoline worth of energy.

No the trucks may not be subsidized by public money. But how many of those trucks were made outside the U.S. That's like a subsidy to the manufacturer. Cheap labor to build, still sold at a high cost. Not to mention not being built by a U.S. citizen that would pay tax on his earnings. There is your subsidy in a different form.

I bet you drive a Subaru.

Youre really trying to convince anyone that that is the same thing as a direct subsidy of $7500 per car?

Diesels are way to bogged down with "clean emission" garbage now. A friend of mine has a 2009 F350 diesel that would get 12-13 mpg. He pulled all the BS off of it, re programed it and now gets a honest 23 mpg.

Check the mileage with careful filling at the pump. Don't believe a dash mounted mpg display After reprogramming.

Some where in this thread I stated I drive a 2008 Prius. 45 to 50 mpg all day everyday. 170,000 miles. When it hits 200,000 we will buy another and keep the 2008. The wife drives 150 miles round trip to work three times per week. I can pass anything on the freeway and go 450 miles on a tank. With five people and luggage.
Oh, and I do have a 1997 Dodge 1500 with 255,000 miles. Made in Mexico. I sits in the driveway most of the time.
I would never drive a Subaru, too many problems.

So instead, he ended up with a fuel efficient, cheap to own and maintain car that has more power, more room, quieter, more luxurious, gets better fuel economy, better resale and is WAY nicer to drive!:D

If thats how you do your math in your part of the world see it that way. :confused2: We will just have to disagree.

Remember, he told me they were going to buy a fuel efficient, cheap to own car. He did not look at the big picture. They would have bought a Porsche if they would have walked on that lot first.

Yep. I don't like subsidizing anything at the manufacturing level. It should be at the consumer level, wheather it is a car or insulation credit or household waterheater. Same with farming.
When a manufacturer takes a job out of the country and imports the product back into this country we all lose.
The manufacturer has a product built somewhere else. And the people in that country can't afford the product. He brings the products back into this country and trys to sell it to people with no money because they are out of work.
The people building the product pay no U.S. taxes. The people out of work in this country pay no taxes, and they can't buy that product from the manufacturer that doe's pay taxes.
The people out of work are being subsidized by the Government either by drawing Unemployment or other government programs.
The illegal immigrant from the country that made the product and working for less wages here is not paying taxes. And he is sending money back home and not spending the money here on a product from a manufacturer that doe's pay taxes.
If someone else is not paying the taxes that means you are paying more. That is a direct subsidy out of your pocket because that manufacturer took jobs out of the country.
The point is. A product should be made where the larger market demand is.
You would be hardpressed to find any Vehicle made entirely from material made in the U.S.
We are not the only consumers in the world, but we do consume more than anyone else.

Idling production of Volt is what you do before you cancel it all together. Wait until the news has calmed down and announce it's cancelation on a Friday. It's coming.

Most in this area are Ford, Chevy & Dodge. Once in a while you will see a Toyota or Nissan I may be mistaken but think they are built in the US.

And most of them are Pre the Gov. buying the auto company's.

American Made Automobiles for Union Members to shop
I'm not promoting union made products. This is just a list of American Made.
I drive Dodge 1500 4x4 made in Mexico. I bought it used.

Sometimes it makes no math sense. Admittedly some of us drive Eco cars for the same reason others drive jacked 4x4 pickups. I'm a bit in that camp, having driven Diesel cars since the mid '70's.

I bought my '03 Jetta Diesel new because I was driving 110 miles round trip to work. I had been driving a paid-for '97 Ford Taurus wagon and would have to fill it every other day. I averaged 12 hour work days and then a two hour round trip drive meant I hated the extra time to gas up. So I bought the Jetta which I filled once a week and got way over twice the mpg. Math would have dictated keeping the Taurus but it was worth every penny I paid for the Jetta: $19,100 + tax would have bought a lot of gas for the Taurus, about 135,000 miles worth. I only have 108,000 miles on the Jetta so I haven't mathematically covered the cost of the Jetta let alone the cost of the fuel I've put in it.

I was at the Chevy Dealer this morning to pick up a part...

Saw a Volt on the lot and the sticker was 45k and change...

They had plenty of trucks up to the 60k range... sticker on the diesel/Allison option is almost 8k...

The volt costs almost 3 times what I paid for my first house in Oakland CA back in 1982...

The Dealership has been around for 100 years and my Grandfather ran the parts department in the 1920's...

I was driving my 91 styleside pickup and two salesman approached me about trading... I told them my truck wouldn't even cover a 1/3 of the sales tax on a trade in...

The owners of those trucks bought them with their own money. The taxpayers did not subsidize each truck $7,500 or more just to put it on the market.

.

Actually quite a few of them are being subsidized either through govn't tax breaks (local and state) and through tax deductions for businesses for certain vehicles.

You're right. It's none of my business what you choose to drive, whether it be a volt or a fuel guzzler. If that's what you want to do, then do it. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If you hate the volt, don't buy it. If that's what you want, then by all means go get one.

I never bought into the hybrid crap and never will. That's what I like about Mazda and the new Mazda3 we picked up. They skipped hybrid tech and redesigned the engine, trans, chassis, etc... instead.
Our 2012 Mazda3i touring loaded with everything but a sunroof/leather was $21k with the new SkyActiv direct injected 155hp 4-cyl 2.0l rated at 28/40 mpg with a new 6 speed auto returns 35 mpg mixed and is a blast to drive!

Congrats on the new car. Mazda makes some pretty nice stuff. I just can't get passed the front end. It looks like my deceased Uncle Fred when he smiled. He had no teeth either.

Thanks, it certainly isn't the best looking car but at 40mpg highway 35 average, $20k brand new, seating for 5 and handling better than most sports cars, I smile too! ;-)

It's an unconvincing stretch of imagination to think they are the same thing but nice try. You have a few grains of truth wrapped up in your BS.

By your twisted logic everyone who takes any kind of tax deduction is subsidized by the government. I think you have got it completely backwards. The citizens and their businesses don't exist for the purpose of paying tax to the government, although that is what you liberals want people to believe, the government exists to serve the citizens.

Pickuptrucks.com has an article, about the best mileage pick-ups, and there are 4 cylinders and the first full size 1/2 ton on their lists the 6.0 litre hybrid GM. it is in the top ten. Technology is what is being refined so we can get better mileage in the future. I do not mind that you hate GM, or are misinformed, about where they build their vehicles, but being glad that 1400 Americans are out of work, WHY?
GM build about the same amount of vehicles they sell in Canada in Canada. They build about the same amount of vehicles they sell in the US in the US. They build and sell vehicles in Mexico as well.
I have a 3500 GMC Duramax crew cab 4x4, made in Flint Michigan. works great and if anyone works there I thank you.
