Jim, You certainly have vision, patience and a great work ethic. I agree with the comment regarding getting the government involved. Best to do it on your own. :D Your projects looks great and as soon as you can get grass growing it will also look beautiful! Congratulations! Yeah, I know it isn't over, but it still deserves a bit Congrats :thumbsup: And thanks again for the help on my rear remote project. Waiting for valve to arrive :cool:.

I don't understand how a vertical riser would've helped.

It looks like water just somehow found its way around your spillway pipe ... or the pipe had a leak.

What am I missing?

Yesterday was pi day (3.14). How were your circular functions?;)

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I do have a long ways to go, but things are lookin' up. I got my culverts delivered yesterday and was totally surprised that they ended up being about $150 less than I had thought.

I also finally took TxDon's suggestion and made a "clay highway" across my gullies so I don't have to drive on the road. As long as I don't get a big rain soon, I'll be okay. I may stick a couple of 12" culverts in them temporarily so they don't wash out. It's supposed to rain again in about a week. I spent most of the day putting in this road. The gullies just inhale material and the slopes are far more severe/steep than the photo can show. The good thing is it halves my time for carrying a load. Another benefit is I don't have to watch/worry about traffic.

Folks, I think the type of overflow Ron is talking about is shown in my simple drawing. The standard overflow pipe is put into the dam at exactly the water depth desired like the black outline in my photo. The right angle type riser overflow is shown in pink. Both achieve the same overflow level, but the riser type places the pipe well below the freeze line and prevents frost heave as Ron demonstrated in his photos. Around here, anything down 12"-18" is well below the frost line and our water bodies rarely freeze even an inch thick.

I'm with Bep on this one??? Seems with the riser, and no overflow, the pipe would be nearly empty? If it's at overflow stage the water would be running. Even if the water froze at the inlet, wouldn't it drain the water below grade ?

I've seen the same thing here (Texas) and it is usually when water found it's way around the pipe and eroded. If frost heave was a major concern, i think I'd make a spillway like Jaypa's doing, no pipe.

I'll take a guess that his pond surface froze, & of course expanded, which pushed his spillway pipe around enough to loosen the soil around it, & then water below the ice layer started washing the dirt from around the pipe ? ... & then all heck breaks loose: No fix can be done until the water is done washing out.

The deep gully land looks much more usable also. When you are through with the business function of the road it looks like it could be the beginning of a good trail bicycle racing course.:thumbsup:
