Thanks again.

BTW - How do I vary the PTO speed?
There is a green section on the tach. I was running in this area and all seemed to be well, but I have no idea whether I was running at 540 or 1000.

If you have a pto shaft with the typical seven splines it will run at 540 pto speed when set at the pto mark on the tach. The pto stub and how it meshes internally (the 540 and 1000 rpm pto stubs engage different spline drives) determines the speed of the shaft. There is no 540/1000 selector lever if that is what you were asking.

If you have really milky looking oil and plan on using the tractor this winter you'll want to flush the brakes too. There is a bleed valve on each axle housing, keep working oil through until it clears up. If your not successful you can use a heat gun to unlock your brakes if they get froze up this winter. Don't ask how I know!
Bad oil can make your 3pt jumpy too. I'd recommend some cheaper oil to help flush out the water. It's hard to get everything out in one shot. There is a reservoir by the radiator, the steering, long main hydraulic lines, the rockshaft piston, brakes, and any remote outlets that won't easily drain or even get quickly mixed with the new oil.

Also don't forget to pull the screen out of the side of the trans when you do the oil change.

Hi, not sure anyone replied to your questions on PTO Speed or starting? But the 1020's didnt all come with two speed PTO's. If yours is so equiped there is two levers on the left side of tractor behind left foot area on main body. Rear most lever is to engage PTO, the forward one is to control speed. As for starting? Early model 1020 in winter you need to have a block heater to aid in starting. They did not come with glow plugs or ether injectors. Some of late models are said to have glow plugs, but I have never seen one, nor are they listed in my parts manual. Good luck, thats a good old tractor

I'll correct a few of your incorrect statements.

No block heater offered on a 1020 as there was no hole to install it. One must use either a tank or hose heater. No glow plugs ever offered on a 1020. 1020 had an ether starting aid,see attached photo.

You are correct about the block heater not offered, I meant to any type coolant or oil heater to aide in starting during colder weather. As for ether unit? not all the 1020's came with them. Mine is a 1966 model and did not come with one. You may be able to find one and retro fit it to your tractor though. Best Wishes, seems alot of people like this old tractor

You are correct on people liking the older tractors. I think some of them will still be running when the plastic/electronic ones of today are in the salvage yard.
