Sorry about the vague title.

The Fit Rite Hydraulics home page shows a interesting looking box scraper attached to a tractor with their top and tilt links.

Does anyone know the mfr of that box scraper?

Thanks

Both of those are Gannon roll-over box blades. Gannon was bought out by Woods several years ago and I believe that when Woods shut down the Gannon plant in California, that was the end of Gannon roll-over box blades. :( There are some others out there, Bush Hog for one, but none are as good as what the Gannons were.

IIRC, Gannon bought Gill. Gill was the first manufacturer of that BB. I have one from the late '70's-early '80's, and it's marked Gill and painted yellow. Otherwise, it's identical to the pic in the link. They are great BB's. Super heavy duty and well built. Practically indestructable. I've used mine behind my 85hp JD, and even used it behind a 100hp NH that I had. Never a problem.

I believe that Gannon was building them in the early-mid 1960s.

Thanks for the info. I checked the Bush-Hog link. It appears that the scarifiers have only a up or down choice, no part-way down. It also appears that there is no provision for hydraulic control - am I correct?

No OEM hydraulic control. The ripper depth would be controlled with your 3pt position control lever. Not really any big deal, pretty simple actually. ;)

So, ripping and grading would be two separate operations. I had a typical box scraper; the scarifiers could loosen the soil and the blade could dig/pull on the same pass. However, adjusting the ht of the scarifiers was a real PIA. It's either a typical box w/ hydraulic control or the rolling blade type.

Also after reading another thread on the subject of a box scraper, it looks like, for a typical type, that the hinged rear blade would work best for me.

Thanks for the info.

I think that you will find that even with the hydraulic actuated rippers that the design is to have the rippers down all the way and the depth has to be regulated with the 3pt hitch.

Pluses and minuses to everything, only you can decide what is right for you. ;)

That is a good point to bring up, the hydraulically operated scarifiers should be all the way down which makes it latchup. The scarifiers themselves are manually adjustable in the same manner as other boxblades.

The landscapers grading around new houses in Southern California had Earthcavators on their 8N tractors back in the early '50s. I think Woods literature said 1948?
