What does this video have to do with your contention that the Ford diesel is junk...

Just more information for you to make a decision if you want a Ford diesel truck. Up to you to decide. I'm just providing some info you might not be aware of, I don't own a pickup truck, they fall short for what I need.

What stats can you provide us wrt to Ford diesel failures vs GM or Cummins?

A friend told me some regional dealers were really discounting new Ford diesels, and Ford was offering a substantial rebate and zero% financing. He said they even had some 2011 still on the lot. I'm not sure if he was correct. Anyone been dealing lately for a Superduty and if so, what's the going price? It may be a good time to get one cheaply. My '06 has 190,000 miles

Come on only 190,000....my 2000 F-350 has 285,000 runs as strong as ever.

Give it a real good wash, wax and interior detail and it'll seem like a new truck with out the payment.

When my water pump and oil cooler seals went out last fall 278,000 miles.
My wife said why don't you just get a new truck.....I said no I'll just invest one monthly payments worth of repairs in this one.

Once a year I typically will replace some different major component as needed. Water pump, alternator, power steering, calipers rotors pads, fluids, filters, ball joints, shocks.

For one years worth of payments you could replace every common major wear
item on the truck....except the engine or transmission.

As long as the body is straight, the interior in not all torn up, I see no reason to get a new truck.

I've purchased two new HD/ Super Duty trucks in the last year and a half or so. I bought a 2010 F250 Supercab with the 6.4 Powerstroke in November 2010 and got a terrific deal on it. I realized how much I missed having a crew cab though and just this January traded it in towards a Crew Cab 2011 Silverado 2500HD with the Vortec gas engine. I noticed that a lot more people are starting to drive gas engines regardless of the brand. The EPA has really hurt modern diesels with all their emissions requirements and a lot of people are starting to figure out what I figured out after owning my 6.4 Powerstroke. That is that the fuel economy is no longer able to even remotely cover the higher fuel costs nor the additional maintenance. Secondly the cost of fixing just about anything on these diesels is about half the trade in value of a 4 or 5 year old truck. The gas engines have been getting better and better and people are having a hard time justifying $9,000 more for a diesel.

I can say based on my experience that there was more incentive money and wiggle room in price on diesels vs. gas engines. Still, given the extra cost of the diesel packages, the extra incentives really don't make the trucks "cheap" by any means.

As for the Ford diesels, I'm not sold on the 6.7 yet. International has been making truck engines for a long time and they had issues getting their engines ready for prime time in the post emissions era. DMax (a product of Isuzu design primarily) has had issues as has the venerable Cummins. I personally think that the biggest advantage that the Cummins has at this point is that they are much cheaper and easier to work on due to their I6 vs. V8 design. The 6.0 certainly had issues when it first hit the street. Then the 6.4 came along, addressed most of those issues and was thought to be bulletproof. Then the 6.4 started having some of its own issues and some of the fuel pump issues became even more prevalent with the 6.4 than the 6.0. Then the 6.7 came along and was supposed to be bulletproof and solve all the problems of the 6.4. Well surprise, surprise the 6.7 is now having fuel pump issues as well. I'm not sure that the 6.7 is any more prone to these issues than the DMax or even Cummins, but it does seem like they're more expensive to solve in the Fords which I think has led some people to think that they're a bigger problem than they may in actuality be.

As for me, I don't need to win drag races. I just picked up a 7.3 Powerstroke equipped Ford truck for a song to have as a spare truck and work truck. I'll be sticking with non emissions equipped diesels for a while. I certainly will not buy a diesel at a high price either, nor one under warranty. Because if I was going to buy anything other than a 7.3 Powerstroke, 12 or 24 valve Cummins or LBY or LBZ Duramax, the first thing that I would do is remove every single piece of emissions equipment on it. Even with an LBY or LBZ Dmax, I'd pick up an EGR delete kit. Emissions equipment is what's killing the modern diesels and for right now, I'm not going to play that game.

Well, in my mind, what sold it for me wasn't so much the failure rate as I don't think we really know that yet, but the fact that Ford is completely shafting the owner's on repairs. Go look an the RV forums or the Ford forums. There was no chance I was going to spend $60k on a truck knowing that non-abusive owner's were getting denied warranty coverage because of a design flaw. Sorry Ford, you'll never see money from me treating your customers like that. Are GM or Dodge perfect? Heck no, but in my opinion right now both are light years ahead of Ford in this area.

Too bad too, as I actually like the Ford truck. There is a reason though that I have only seen 2 new Super Duty's here in my area in the last YEAR. Not even joking. This entire area is owned by 7.3s. I see more of those than any other truck overall. However, as far as new rigs, it is Dodge first, and GM second. Ford isn't even a player around here anymore. Again, this is my non-scientific observation, so you get what you paid for it. :D

For what its worth, BAE has picked the 6.7 to power their entry in the bidding to come up with a replacement for the Hummer. I have to believe if the 6.7 had any real issues, this would NOT be happening. Also just look at the number of Super Duties sold with the 6.7- I believe its close to 50%. I too have heard of some issues associated with water in the fuel but it seems hard to believe that the problem is that common.

I've also heard that some of the water in the fuel issues are because DEF was put in the fuel tank. I wonder how many of the owners who have had the water in the fuel issues actually know much about diesels? How many dealers actually explained about the fuel/DEF filling? Not saying that all are like this because I know of some who have had this problem with Ford actually know more about their diesel than many mechanics.

I have a 2011 F250 with the 6.7 and it's been a rock solid truck. I also spend a great deal of time on the truck forums and there are less than ten documented cases of "water getting by the fuel filter"

Bosch builds the fuel pump, and the flaw has more to do with poor quality diesel fuel than water. (meaning there is less cetacea in our crap EPA fuel)

I put Power Service in the truck and like I said it runs like a dream.

If you can get 0% financing for a long enough term, I would not be scared of the truck. My dealer threw in a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper 3rd party warranty to sweeten the deal when I purchased mine in Dec of 2010.

I wouldn't buy a Chevy or Dodge vehicle today if my life depended on it, sorry, not that they are a bad product, but I'm not an Obama Motors guy. Ford did it right, they get my business.

10-4 on Obama Motors- and nothing like FACTS vs.."I heard it from a guy whose cousin knows a mechanic at a Ford dealer blah blah.

And I agree 100% with TRR. It is scary just how little some people in the business know about their product-in particular sales people. I have had to explain to more than one Ford "truck salesman" what Bluediamond was. I think Ford does a lousy job of educating their sales organization-or perhaps the info is there but the dealer mgt. doesn't take the tiome to pass it on.

One other side to that point- many of us on these forums -be it this one, Blueoval news, the Dieselstop etc.- have a passion for what we do. Big difference when to some people they have a "job"-and that's it.
