I need to be a part of that group, my L4350 is the baby of the series but just as worthy. AND I can drag trees out of the woods!

GrayGhost,

How does your L5450 start in that cold weather? We have moderate weather (only gets a little below freezing) and I don't even need to use the glow plugs.

Magicheater - the L4350 is actually in the middle of the model numbers, which includes the L3350, L3750, L4150, L4350, L4850 and L5450. Fabulous machines - heavy, strong, rugged, massive, stout, and powerful. The early ones were given model numbers equivalent to their usable pto horsepower, much lower numbers than the way they market today's machines. The L4350 is about equivalent in power and weight to today's M5040.

JoeBuyer - above 25 deg L5450s start fine without glow plugs.

Thanks, at best it was an educated guess. I had a lot of time to research tractors as cabin fever was setting in that Winter. Of course since I bought it the Winters have been below average in snow. I bought chains for it last Fall, which caused this mild and basically snowless Winter. As with any tool, you always find many more uses for it. Last Summer I used it to pull 30 trees out of the woods for 2-3 years of firewood. I also have a 7ft blade in the back and have been leveling some ground near the house. Any suggestions for a toothbar for the bucket? I really like the look of the cab on your tractor. I went to that company's website. Nice looking product. Not sure what the price of one is, but I would assume $4000 - 8,000. I spend a lot of time in the woods with my tractor and as much as I would like the cab for Winter weather, it would take a beating in the woods. It wouldn't appear that they are easily removed. I will certainly have questions for you about the L5450. Thanks for the offer.

The first Winter I had it, I quickly found out the battery was shot. Since I got a new one, I haven't had a problem. Of course the Winters have been mild. Dick Bargeron up north in Mass. knows much more than I could ever claim to about tractors. 2 mild Winters, next year it maybe time for payback. Hope you are enjoy the tractor.

No toothbar experience -
Back when I was looking for a cab - Laurin still had some of these new - it was $6700 plus freight then - probably $8k+ by now, if they have any. This cab model is very strong - and has flat glass (less $$ to replace) The steel cab corners protect the operator very well in the woods. I've only broken side windows and then only when left open & catch on something. For the summer the doors and back window lift off. Don't need ac in MA. The cab could be unbolted but its a big job. I finally found a tractor that had one already - then sold the non-cab machine. The only time the cab is unhandy is using the backhoe - gotta get down and go around, can't just step over. Small price to pay for protection from snow, rain and sun. Take care, Dick B.

Just bought a closed cab L5450 with BF1100 loader and no manuals. Have had other Kubotas in the past, but not this big. Any suggestions on operating it would be appreciated.

Hey Rick - congrats on finding a L5450. Is the cab a Laurin or is it Jo-Dale Perry? The BF1100 was found on Canadian machines I think. Does this L5450 have the hydraulic Shuttle? Two-speed or single speed pto? R1 rubber or R4? Pretty sure all L5450's have live independent pto (clutch lever beside the seat).

The hard cab is a dealer-installed item - the loader usually becomes non-removable unless the valve mounting is altered. (modified mine so the valve stays with the cab when the loader is off).

Let me know what questions come up - maybe I've been there. Dick B

Rick,
L5450s are great machines, you will be very happy with yours. Mine has the LA1150A loader and I converted it to Skid Steer quick attach, which really, really enhances the versatility of the machine. I am now in the process of adding 3 hydraulic spools so I can run hydraulics for a grapple, top link and side link on the 3 pt at the same time. We have 9 tractors but this one became my favorite for all around use due its perfect size, power, turning radius, ease of getting on and off, etc. etc. I don't live where I need a cab, I bet that is a nice option. I'd change the fluids, particularly the engine oil, right away so you know where you are on maintenance. I was glad I did. While mine had few hours, it hadn't been kept up on maintenance.

Thanks to all for the replies. Looks like mine may be the 8th one Kubota made based on the serial number. It just had the clutch replaced and recently had an after market starter installed with less than satisfactory results. I am pretty sure the fluids were all serviced, but the dip stick shows a lot of oil above the top mark which scares me in a diesel engine. The dealer who serviced it before I bought it is going to let me know where and how much the manuals can be bought for. I'll ask about the fluids.
