i have a savage 110 in 30-06
good gun
I'm on the computer now, easier to type.
The 770 is a Remington attempt to capture a lowball price point. I don't understand why they did it since they run the base 700 with heavy rebates a couple of times a year that nets it out almost the same dollars.
The 770 is about as cheap as you can build a centerfire rifle that still works. It doesn't share common components with the 700 series. It is not built to last. 10 years from now I would see getting even minor parts as a PIA. Remington has a track record to back this, just look at some .22 rimfires they've tried to compete with Marlin and Ruger.
The Marlin bolt gun is very interesting. They basically copied some of the best features of other rifles into one and executed it very well.
Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa of Japan model 1500 in Weatherby styling. For the money you get a nice rifle that works great and shoots great backed by a great company. The absolute best value on a magnum rifle by far is a Vanguard chambered in one of the Weatherby mags.
The Savage / Stevens line is tried and true. Savage makes an exellent barrel and the only big complaint on a Savage, the trigger, was solved with the Accutrigger. Since then everyone has copied it. Savage's are accurate because of the quality of the barrel and the unique barrel nut (Copied by Marlin on their new rifle). They put in a headspace gauge and set the headspace then tighten down the nut. It was designed to speed assembly and take out cost - it was brillant since it is the most consistent, accurate way to screw a barrel into a receiver.
I'll throw this out at you, I've wanted to build one but haven't gotten around to it. You get one of these bargain bolt guns in .308 or 30/06 and put on or have put on a scout scope rail forward of the receiver and mount a low magnification scout scope on it. Gives you two eyes open fast shooting gun that is light and accurate.
BTW, I have handled, shot, sighted in several examples of each of the guns above for what its worth.
