i'll have to look around. I'm not stuck on the 770 or even the rem name.

savage is a fine gun.. I have an older bolt action savage 30-30 love her.. was my hog gun forever till I got my marlin 336 about 22ys ago..

what i'm looking for is cheap, 30-06 ( would go 300wm :) ) scope, and safe, and at least 'good' accuracy. doens't have to drive tacks with .5 inch group.. but 1" group would be desireable minimum...

Might wanna check out a Stevens rifle also, made by Savage. Forgot about them. Lots of gun makers are coming out with these low priced rifles because they sell, and sell fast.

Those are good too, they are a savage 110 without the accu trigger and a little cheaper stock, otherwise the exact same gun off the same factory floor.

remington has had some bad luck with their "cheep bolt action rifles". Take a look at it if it is the type that has any more than 2 locking lugs on the front of the bolt I would leave it there. IMHO

It has three locking lugs with a 60 degree bolt action.:)

A Real Knock about rifle = .303 Jungle Carbine:thumbsup:
It's stood the Test of Time!

I have a remy 700 in 22-250 I bought at Wal-Mart in 1999 for around $398. Took it home, put a scope on it, on the 5th shot the bolt fell OFF!! Still sits that way now, Remington wanted me to Ship the darn thing on my dime to be repaired, couldn't take it back to Wal-mart (same day I bought it) I think it "may" shoot well:laughing: Getting the live round out was a PITA too. Tried spot welding it with my wire welder and was able to open the bolt.

I went in on the halves to get my nephew a 700 in .270 with scope combo for $298, has been flawless so far. Go figure.

I'm on the computer now, easier to type.
The 770 is a Remington attempt to capture a lowball price point. I don't understand why they did it since they run the base 700 with heavy rebates a couple of times a year that nets it out almost the same dollars.

The 770 is about as cheap as you can build a centerfire rifle that still works. It doesn't share common components with the 700 series. It is not built to last. 10 years from now I would see getting even minor parts as a PIA. Remington has a track record to back this, just look at some .22 rimfires they've tried to compete with Marlin and Ruger.

The Marlin bolt gun is very interesting. They basically copied some of the best features of other rifles into one and executed it very well.

Weatherby Vanguard is a Howa of Japan model 1500 in Weatherby styling. For the money you get a nice rifle that works great and shoots great backed by a great company. The absolute best value on a magnum rifle by far is a Vanguard chambered in one of the Weatherby mags.

The Savage / Stevens line is tried and true. Savage makes an exellent barrel and the only big complaint on a Savage, the trigger, was solved with the Accutrigger. Since then everyone has copied it. Savage's are accurate because of the quality of the barrel and the unique barrel nut (Copied by Marlin on their new rifle). They put in a headspace gauge and set the headspace then tighten down the nut. It was designed to speed assembly and take out cost - it was brillant since it is the most consistent, accurate way to screw a barrel into a receiver.

I'll throw this out at you, I've wanted to build one but haven't gotten around to it. You get one of these bargain bolt guns in .308 or 30/06 and put on or have put on a scout scope rail forward of the receiver and mount a low magnification scout scope on it. Gives you two eyes open fast shooting gun that is light and accurate.

BTW, I have handled, shot, sighted in several examples of each of the guns above for what its worth.

There is a TV special I can watch via Netflix about Remington's rifle problems. I just fired up the entertainment components needed... yup there is the Roku logo... hmmmm no joy ...trying instant watcher...

"The Remington 700 is one of the world's most popular firearms. Remington insists its gun is safe -- but allegations and lawsuits point to a trail of death, serious injury and thousands of complaints."

I agree with Dusty on just about everything except the Marlin -- now owned by Remington and you have to look for their older stock -- the new stuff seems a bit rough last I looked. a 30/06 will be available in just about all the cheaper lines cause of its popularity -- often see those guns in .300 win mag and .270 as well.
My kicking around gun is an old .308 Israeli Mauser with a synthetic stock, scope and a new trigger -- shoots less than 1/2 inch groups with reloads and is virtually indestructable - ugly and a bit heavy but the price was right and scratches don't bother it. Very solid feel and no problem with parts (Not that I have ever needed any) or accessories.

Orginal 700 trigger is a great target trigger. It has user adjustable sear engagement, overtravel, and trigger return spring pre load. That is it's problem, it has to be adjusted properly or you can get an unintentional bang. Remington does not endorse monkeying with it, but many have.

Remington has modded it a couple of times, the new one is totally different.
