Fuel additive

My understanding is those people who burn through their diesel quickly and often would not see a benefit to most additives. For those of us that have diesel that sits around for months, a water remover and a biocide would prevent the two biggest causes of premature engine death.

There is a big difference to me on running diesel fuel thru my tractors and my two Ford 350's fuel system and running it thru my VW '09 TDI.

I've used PS for decades, primarily for a little cetane boost and water control.

I just bought a 5 gallon pail of Optilube, mainly for my TDI.

Those that run Bosch fuel pumps need to be careful
There is information from Bosch that states their 4.2 series pump which is used on the LML Duramax, Ford 6.7 and perhaps the newer VW TDI's are only expected to last 1,000 hours when using diesel that has 520 scar rating. I think the European diesel is rated at around 460 scar. From the forums there has been numerous reports of VW TDI pump failures on American autos.

Haven't used any diesel additives in over 30 years in my tractors and trucks. I did use an additive years ago in the diesel fuel in my sail boat just in case since it used so little fuel although I never had a problem.

Because the sulfer content of diesel fuel has been reduced from 15,000 to 500 to 15 parts per million, the lubricating characteristic of diesel fuel has also been reduced. This means your engine doesn't get the optimal benefit it would as if it had the higher level of lubricity. Moreover, at cold temperatures diesel begins to gel and wax and the water begins to form ice crystals. This can cause problems with the pumping of fuel and filter plugging, something you really don't want going on in your engine. All in all, a dirty engine can mean lower gas mileage and shorter engine life. So getting an additive with superb detergency promotes a more complete combustion of diesel in your engine. And that improved combustion leads to reduced emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulates as well as reduced smoke and improved power and fuel economy.

Do any of the diesel engine manufacturers recommend use of a diesel fuel additive?

Do you think any diesel manufacturers are interested in selling parts?

Bosch (the manufacturer of FUEL pumps) recommends a maximum scar level of 460. They don't care how you achieve it.

Since this recommendation did not come out until 2009 (ULSD came in about 2007) many people are unaware of it.

It seems that the ENGINE manufacturers are not presently concerned with the fact that diesel fuel in the United States doesn't meet the standards recommended by Bosch.

I'm not surprised that you did not need fuel additives for 30 years. Up until 2007 sulfur lubed your fuel system.

So don't be concerned, continue not adding lubrication to your fuel, your fuel pumps may not need it.

I am not concerned. Keep buying the snake oil.
