Fuel additive

I use Opti-Lube XPD.

Here is a study that rates additives for lubricity. Opti-Lube has other diesel fuel enhancing ingredients. It seems to only be available online at Diesel Fuel Improver

Google "opti-lube review" for some eye opening evaluations from third parties.

Well I just ordered some. Hope it improves things, milage and corrosion.

if you never used any try a good one and you will notice a difference

prove it. My respected oil testing house will tell you most are crap. You can add engine oil and notice a difference on engine feel. That does not mean it helps at all though.

Read the study listed in post #11. It has engine oil rated as well.

If I understand that study, the results are based on untreated diesel fuel. The study also is missing information such as dates and source of diesel. Am I wrong?

All I know is we have diesel tractors made as far back as the mid 60's, my dad had a fleet of trucks, my father in law had a fleet of trucks and was a fuel distributor, our renters have a bunch of tractors and no one has had issues and none of use additives. I have tried it and actually have some in my garage and I don't use it.

I did get good results on our BX2200 years ago, HEET and Power Service when I got some bad diesel, but when the problem was rectified I stopped. If it happens again, I will just get rid of the fuel, change filters and go from there. Of course we may all be wrong, so do what makes you comfortable. The money spent on one tractor isn't going to be a big deal.

Untreated diesel fuel: Correct. Any prior additives would skew the study. A standard procedure for a scientific study is to eliminate variables or outside influence on the issue being investigated.

Source: Supply source not specifically named. Not sure that it matters since only the lubricity of the additive was being tested. The importance is that it is from the same source and batch.
"The Research firm obtained a quantity of untreated ULSD fuel from a supplier."

Date: August 2007 according to the sponsers Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

Also, at the very bottom of this topic is a box with links to "Similar Threads" to pursue. Seems like this topic has as variable opinions as hydraulic oil or engine oil. :p

While I admit it's not necessary to add anything during the summer, but winter months, I DEPEND on my BX for a variety of tasks. I don't NOT want to deal with gelled fuel. I have no home test I can do other then take a small sample and put in the freezer for couple days before I fill up the tank. I am not sure if my wife is keen on having a sealed bottle of diesel in the freezer with the food I have in there.
The white bottle PS is the biggest stress reliever in my mind when adding it to diesel during the summer. For all I know I can blame Power Service and try to take them to court if my fuel EVER gells up. .

So where does this leave us? Do you HAVE to use additives? a simple NO will suffice. Its how you want to be protected. No one is holding a gun to your head to use it, but when if gels up ..... or if the engine shows abnormal wear from low lubricity of the ultra low sulfur diesel ..... :confused3: . I don't know the clear answer to this. I just know I am not familiar with teardown and rebuild of diesel engine as I never done it nor I haven't had the pleasure of gelled fuel, changing TWO filters on the BX and adding 911 to get going again yet. I don't care about adding more cetane's since my tractor is not over 25 hp.

I am calling the additives cheap insurance in my mind. Call it what you will and want to do.

I agree but you can play the cheap insurance game all day; even with engine oils too! LOL.

In my 30 yearss with diesel, no adds other then MMO and at -21 F a few years ago, no issues in MA winters.

If you use an add I would get UOA's since again results can be crap using them. Good luck! If not, you will be fine with winter fuel. YMMV

Wow! This is a lot of info to go through. I guess when it comes down to it, do you trust the supplier put in additive. I know that with my job in the propane business, if we dont add methanol to the tanks it will cause the regulator to freeze up. We do have a few slackers that forget to do it. I guess if one wants to be safe, a little additive wouldnt hurt would it?
