I bought a new to me 5ft KK Rototiller last January and just started using it today. The area I was using it had a slight hill on one side, and as I was going up it, the two sections of the PTO shaft separate as the front of the tractor was pointing up the hill. How much overlap should there be? Obviously, if I don't have enough, it looks like I'll have to buy a new one and cut it down to the correct length. The seller had used it with a Ford 8N so I guess he cut it suit that tractor. The PEC that I have on mine might be part of why it separated, since it moves the attachment back about 3 1/2 inches. I do have a PTO shaft extender that I use with other PTO powered attachments. In theory, that should make up the extra distance it moves it rearward. On level ground, it did just fine though.

Yes, I think they say 6" but one of mine is only 4" but it doesn't follow the contour of the ground. I did have one pto shaft too short and bought a long one and use part of the long one and part of the short one (other two halves were also put together). They don't meet in the middle but I couldn't see a problem with that.

6" is a good rule of thumb. 3" is fine if it is rigid 3 pt attachment and short shaft. If the 3rd point is not rigid such as a tail wheel mower that allows the implement to pivot which may take additional overlap to maintain engagement. For instance - on my tiller I would have no problem with 3" of engagement at maximum extension but on my Bush Hog with a much longer shaft and flexing length as I go through the field I am not comfortable with even 6" of engagement.

Since you have the PEC system I suggest you use a PTO shaft extender.

I will try to see if I can measure the PTO shaft this weekend and determine how much/little overlap there is with it now. Btw, reread my post, I am using a PTO shaft extender. Maybe it wasn't clear in the wording, but I was using it with the rototiller. Thanks.

Here is the extender that I've used. Seems to work fine for only $20.

Pto Adapter 1-3/8 X6 Spline Male X 1-3/8X6 Spline Female Pto Adapter

Not sure if you could use two of them back-to-back, however. There may be a little too much slop. There are ones made that are up to 11" long but I think they are bolt on. You'd need a hole in the PTO shaft to mount it - check the tractor's PTO shaft. There was a discussion on this subject a little while back on TBN,

I have at least 6" to 8" overlap on all my drivelines. You could take the female half to tractor shop and have the replace the shaft with a longer one. A lot cheaper than buying a new complete shaft.

I would size the PTO shaft so you don't have to use the adapter - Mine has a little bit of slop, too.
