Don't let yourself be talked out of the diesel by rubadub. They do last a lot longer and their retail value remains higher. Just sayin'
No doubt he likes his non-diesel and has good reasons for stickin up for his choice. Don't we all. :)

Diesel all the way. Of course, you could also step up to something a little more substantial for the $$, like the 1026R. The 749 is pricey and for the money I think a subcompact makes more sense.

I just don't see a benefit in upgrading to a subcompact. I realize the price is about the same, but I think the X700 series will be better for mowing and blowing snow than a subcompact. I would love to hear everyones' thoughts on this too.

What is a hydro heater and what runs it?

Rob

It is like an engine block heater but is screwed into the back of the hydrostatic transmission near the PTO (Deere 4100). It has a cord that unplugs right at the heater so it isn't in the way. It was cheap and heats the oil similarly to the way an engine block heater heats coolant. I plug it into the 110v outlet on my garage wall next to where I plug in the engine block heater.

I prefer the x749 over the subcompact for a few reasons. The all wheel steer will turn alot sharper without damaging the turf. The single speed hydrostatic is setup with optimum gearing to handle everything you wan't to do. No need to try to figure out whether you should be in low (too slow) or high (too fast). The x749 has the same 26 12 12 size tires and almost the same hp. One of my concerns that sealed the choice was the low squatty design of the 749, working in the mountains on steep slopes it has performed flawlessly.

With a 1026R you do gain position control and the ability to add a small fel. You have a higher lift capacity on the 3PH, two ranges which should be better for fel work and a few other extras. It is more like a tiny utility tractor is the best description I can think of. It would be a good choice for the guy who wants to add a small backhoe and /or who wants to have a fel for moving small amounts of dirt and gravel. In open areas that are closer to level it would be more versatile, you can get alot of nice attachments such as the quick connect deck.

When I built the landplane grader a couple of weeks ago I was concerned that it may weigh too much for the 749 to lift but the following Monday we tried it with one of my helpers (175lbs) standing on it and it lifted him up just fine no bouncing. At any rate the 3PH on this mower works extremely well and should be no problem for 5' subcompact implements. To the point in most conditions I don't see where the 1026R is going to perform much better with the majority of implements you would need. I do see the x749 being alot better at mowing around obstacles and climbing and turning up hillsides. The all wheel steer not only allows you to steer tighter turns but also provides more steerage too, so less problems with front mounted blades and snowblowers.

Well been there I guess a little bit about who I am and why I'm praising the x728 is in order, so here you go.

If we take a look back at what I just posted it was a ton of information with pictures and a video and a spec sheet, quite a bit of information that I didn't see from the diesels guys other then buy a diesel.

I was born in Michigans Northern lower pennisula and worked at lower paying jobs up until around 40 something years old. My wife was a stay at home mom with our four children, so I learned how to fix things and through out my 70 years of fixing things got an appreciation for things that were well built and worked good and didn't need a lot of repair.

I was a real Tool and Die Maker and also worked with a welder for a couple of years welding and fabricating.

I also self taught myself to fix cars, trucks and motorcycles and put my self up a nice shop.

I took every cent I could save and bought tools one at a time and also learned how to do body work and paint plus all the carpenter work to build my garages and remodel my house and what ever else needed to be built.

I worked full time jobs my whole life plus extra jobs, where ever I could turn a buck I would be after it.

Sooooo in that time span I learned to appreciate two stroke engines that could turn 12000 rpm, muscle cars with big displacement stroker motors and anything that had 2 or four wheels it peaked my interest.

In my later years 55 plus I did a bit of fabricating and painting and thats when I started looking a little closer at the John Deere garden tractors.

My x728 in particular I would get under it and look it all over and admire the workmanship of how it all went together and the paint and metal work, they truly are a really well made tractor.

The first time we used it was in the winter blowing snow and with the cab heater and power steering I was a bit put back, I didn't have any idea it would do what it did with such little effort on the operator, like a limo on the freeway, no chains and the fourwheel drive, simply amazing, yes they are that good.

Now as for the diesel and gasoline engine, two different animals, the diesel has been been around for years, but not the electronic fuel injection on the Kawaski Twin, this is engineering at its best, they start fast and run clean.

We are really lucky to just be able to buy a machine that runs like they do, I'm 70 years old and feel very fortunate just to be able to get one, John Deere should be very proud of the X728 and how it runs and what it does.

One last thing, take the information I just put out and read it again, because it is very informative if you really think about it.

In my opnion only, I would go with the Yanmar Diesel in the X749 AWS, a lot more fuel efficant then the gas engines. The X728, gas mower is a very nice mower as well, but I would NEVER go back to a gas mower again. I had a 425AWS with the Kawaski gas engine at one time, in fact for only a few months, while the tractor its self was great, that Kawaski gas engine was a pig on fuel, especially when running the 60" deck, just from my experence only.

Now the X728, has more power then the 425 did, and more horsepower, but for whats it worh, I would go Diesel in a heart beat. Those Yanmar Diesels just sip the fuel compared to a gas engine. I am not saying that the X728 is a bad mower, but I prefer the Diesel engine over all.

Currently, my main tractors in my lawn maintence business is a Deere X744 AWS & a 2006 John Deere 2305 subcompact.

Both my X744 & 2305 have the same Yanmar Diesel engine rated at the same hp. I love the MFWD on my 2305 for blowing snow, and like the fact that for road travel, I can put it out of 4WD when not needed, unlike the X749 that is always in 4WD. I agree that 4X4 is a must have, but there are some jobs out their that don't require 4X4, such as mowing flat areas or pulling a small utlity cart. Actually wish Deere would offer the option of turning off and on the 4WD on the X700 series, like they once offered on the X595.

Now, my X744 AWS will cut a lot closer around objects then the 2305, and is much more stable on slopes then my 2305, even though the 2305 has ROPS and the X744 doesn't, the X744 seems more stable.
I mainly use the 2305 for snow removal now, as I just put a Curtis soft side cab on, this past winter, and removing it on and off has become too much of a pain, on top of that the cab rubs against a lot of tree branches.
Certainly, a subcompact has a lot of benifits, especially if want to put a loader on. You can't get a loader for a X749AWS, only the 2wd versions: X728, X720, X748.
If you need a loader, then its best to move up to a subcompact, but its hard to beat the AWS for manuverablity. I doubt I would buy another Garden tractor without AWS, seeing as they are so manuverable compared to a 2wd garden tractor, just my two cents though.

Fuel prices in Traverse City today.

Gasoline $3.90 a gallon

Diesel $4.26 a gallon

Were 36 cents a gallon to start then add the different additives for the diesel, plus if you need a block heater, and keeping track of the summer and winter blends and when you can get it.

Then how long will it stay in your tank or can without gelling, then the higher cost to buy the diesel motor up front plus if you need it fixed you better hope you can find a good diesel mechanic that will work on it and that won't be cheap.

I know Auto Zone sells the diesel additives by the pallet loads, and it isn't cheap.

So their :D

Sorry Rob. Don't buy it for a second.
Wisconsin winters and I've yet to add anything to the diesel fuel, nor plugged in a heater.

Buy from the local pump and the summer winter fuel is taken care of there. About 10-15 cents difference on price.

But it is really ok for you to have what you want, and enjoy it for all those good reasons. :)
