I wanna say 3800lbs dry, the storage box on the front held alot of chains and binders so it added up real fast.

Because it has nothing to do with what a truck can tow.
Duffster, This thread is about danceswithdirt's truck, trailer and equipment. His concerns about getting the best trailer setup for his needs and being legal when towing, if he would get a CDL to tow over 26.000 lbs he would still not be legal with a tow vehicle only capable of around 23500 GCWR. So in this situation why does it have nothing to do with what a truck can tow? What am I missing? He is getting alot of information from people, so he can make a decision on what trailer he can buy without having regrets afterwords.

First off tow rating and GCWR are not legal ratings but that's for another thread.

Pulling a dual tired tandem axle 20k GVWR trailer empty is well within the towing recommendations yet still over the CDL threshold.;)

Where can you get one for a $100?

In IL last time I renewed mine it was under $100, but yes every 2 years I have to renew my medical card.

Back on topic if it was me a gooseneck with 8-10k single wheel trailer with 17.5 tires dual power jacks, and hydraulic dove tail about 33 long but that is my dream trailer.
Get pleant of trailer spend a little more now and not worry about overloading trailer.
In IL I have never had DOT look at anything but the plates to determine if I was overwieght.

Powerstroke444. Not following what you meant by DOT just looking at plates to determine if you are overweight.

In IL you buy plates for what you want to haul on the truck. As long as you don't exceed Federal bridge rules and your total gross is under plates your good to go. IE I plated my F450 for 16k and my one gooseneck trailer for 16K so I can gross 32K. A buddies 16' dump is plated for 34k and my dodge 3500 is plated for 12k so in theory I can gross 46,000. Most I have every scaled is 41,000 and that was by DOT on road side, they just checked truck over and sent me on.

I got stopped today on way out of the quarry and just showed my ticket 15,800 on my F450 with 16,000lbs plates just smiled and keep it legal.

As a side note I do own an insurance agency as well as part owner in a construction business and make it a point to know the laws in my state and keep everything legal as I don't want my name in the paper doing to wrong.
