Fair enough and I shall stand by mine and I'll bet you are a fine fella but if you knock on my door I will still be cautious until I feel comfortable..:)

Suppose the guy who knocks on your door is wearing a "TBN Member of the Month" cap. Are you still going to suspect he is there to steal your silverware or artwork?

Perhaps we members need to have a "secret handshake" or some other sign to indicate we have nothing but good intentions to others....

Kudo's to your wife. Job well done. It's frightening to think what could have been.

I'm a big believer in keeping a safe distance and always having a backup plan. To add a little peace of mind, I replaced my light weight glass storm door with a generic looking Larson secure glass storm door. Although looking like an ordinary storm door, it has special glass with an internal shield, and when you raise the handle, it activates double bolts top and bottom. We normally leave the bolts engaged, especially when talking to an unknown 'visitor'. I'm not saying the door is any way impenetrable, but it should provide sufficient surprise to allow us the precious few seconds to seek refuge in our 'safe' room.

I live on a dead end street, and not only does the clear glass door allow us to see who is approaching the door, it also provides some peace of mind knowing the visitor can not just walk through it, like a screen or lightweight storm door would permit.

That said, I simply can't imagine living in a world where every van is suspicious, every spray bottle held by a stranger a weapon, every stranger a threat, every neighbors house a meth lab.

Do you live at the end of a private road?

Behind a gate?

With no trespass signs?

In a house that cannot be seen from the gate?

It is one thing to live in a house in the city and someone rings the door bell. It is quite different when you are 1500-1600 feet from a gate, with posted signs, and someone drives up to the house. Most of the time the people are lost. Other times you have to base your actions on their behavior.

The vast majority of people who trespass our land our lost. They realize they are lost and leave. Only two have gotten out of their cars. When someone gets out of the car it is different. One had better think about what is going on.

How many times has someone knocked on your door with a spray bottle? It has only happened once to me and I have lived in some bad places.

When I lived in South FLA one of the common scams was to approach cars at stop lights with a spray bottle to wash the car window for a fee. It was not uncommon for the occupants of the car to be robbed. One of the local TV talking heads was beaten and robbed by a person carrying a spray bottle. The man had approached the car to "clean" her windows.

Our neighbors are not running meth labs but I swear I can hear a thumper running on a still on some nights when it is cool out.

Later,
Dan

JD - How about the guys that yell police and have jackets on the Have Police printed on them....You gonna believe that ? We have had that happen here with home invasions...they yell police then kick your door come storming in with guns drawn...and they are not cops but home invaders.

I would rather be tried by a jury of 12 than carried by pall bearers...:)

My mom had a similar thing happen in the early 60's. We lived near South Mills, NC in the country, on a dirt road, closest house about 1/2 mile through woods. Mom was raised in north Alabama and can shoot anything that holds a round. Two guys pulled into the yard and came to the front screen porch and tried to open the door, mom opened the front door and ask what they were doing. His answer was looking for someone, still trying to get the door open. Mom reached beside the door in the hall and leveled her 20 ga side by side towards them and they got in the car and left. We had no phone, let alone cell phones and dad worked in the Ford plant 50 miles away, we were in school. She would not have hesitated to leave them in a pile in the front yard, and at 89, still wouldn't.;)

Your response is out of line. Yes, you brought up some valid points, but the OP's wife did use good common sense and you need to apologize for your last comment.

There is no one simple answer to all situations. But when police response can be hours, if ever, hiding inside with kids can be the wrong answer. Most thieves like this are looking for easy pickings and they found out that this was not what they were looking for.

Ken

Ahh Sorry Ken but I stand by my comments 100%. Confronting ANYONE is stupid PERIOD. Yes the wife came out on the good side, but due to luck ONLY. There are a millions ways that situation could have gone wrong.

Since you now anyone else has question that fact that there COULD HAVE BEEN someone else that the wife was unaware I accept your apology.

Common sense says DO NOT go to the enemy let the enemy come to you.

I will repeat it here. The wife was completely unaware of what the "enemy" was up to , was unaware of how many there were, unaware what weapon the did or didn't have.
So she had a piston - BIG DEAL against an AK47. Even if she was Annie Oakley, she's still going to be injured. ...oh ya and remember we still don't know HOW MANY "perps" there were/are, did we?

So being so unaware of so many crucial facts what she did was irresponsible. With a Capital I.

Someone else trying to justify her irresponsibility said "she put herself between the bad guys and the kids so the kids could run" .....RUN WHERE into the arms of the OTHER BAD GUYS at the back door. Again she was clueless about everything but the fact there was "someone" in the driveway.

Again she used NO COMMON SENSE.

There isn't a tactician on the planet that would agree with her technique. Not military, not Police, not anyone.

Maybe this will help. Woman walks up to strange vehicle with a gun, and doesn't know what the vehicle is there for, how many people are in the vehicle, how many people got out of the vehicle and are surrounding her as she walks up, how many weapons they have, if there is a sniper / look out in the distance that was dropped off pointing at her head with a high powered sniper rifle.....Do you want me to go on?

All that sound like Common Sense to me.

"All that sounds like common sense to me." Cat_Driver.

The phrase "common sense" means what appears logical to you based on your life experiences. So the readers may be better informed as to the basis of your stoutly stated opinion, Cat_Driver, tell us the scope of your life experiences with the criminal element.

A desk is a dangerous place from which to watch the world.

Catdriver....I think you are missing the point ...You are entitled to your opinion on how best to handle this situation but You have insulted scesnick's wife....You have called her stupid, Irresponsible and lacking common sense..Now do you think maybe you should have refrained from making it personal and insulting a TBN members wife...?

Notice scesnick just posted an experience his wife had to give us all a warning...he meant to help us and now he has to read this...I can tell you if you posted this about my wife....I would invite you to come say to my face !
