I gather you're glad to be out of CA now?

When I first came to CA 40+ years ago it was a great state and a great place to live.

Over time, it became infested with liberals who like to spend my money attracting illegals into the state so they can live on welfare. Between that and income redistribution, they have destroyed all incentive to work.

Sometime in the next few years they will completely eradicate all new small business startups and then tax and regulate the survivors into oblivion.

CA is a great place to be from.

Dave,

Congrats on your move and the beginning of the next chapter for you.

But that's a pretty harsh assessment of Woodside. Where else can you rebuild a house and sell it for so much more? Where else is property worth as much as in Silicon Valley? If there is no incentive to work, who is running Apple, HP, Oracle, Google, Facebook, and so many other outrageously successful companies? Who are the ones building all the new houses, that are not interested in working?

It's fine to be glad you moved to your dream location, as I have done, but is it necessary to deride everything about the state you, apparently, were successful in? I mean, if you owned property in Woodside, you had it made. Woodside is some of the most valuable property in the country and highly sought after by very successful people from all over the world with its wooded, rustic feel, very famous neighbors and close proximity to Silicon Valley. You must have been successful in California too. And you were neighbors, at some point, with Steve Jobs and Shirley Temple, among many others. Woodside is a beautiful, wooded, neighborhood where homes sell for outrageous prices and bidders compete against each other to get them.

I have been in business in California for over thirty years. I've lived there for about 60 years. I have now moved to Nevada and I'm glad I did. But I haven't the desire to deride California using tired stereotypes and political generalizations that really don't make sense. Especially after boosting myself forward on the success I found there, as you have apparently done. Wouldn't it be nice to turn down the rhetoric at some point? Was I one of the people that, as you say, "infested" the state?

It's always wonderful to move on to a new and better place. A place that is better for us considering what we want now instead of what we wanted in the past. A place that offers us peace. I wish you happiness in your new environment. And I wish happiness to those that bought your home in Woodside. You know, the ones with big bucks and no incentive, that decided to "infest" California by buying your place with all that money while living on welfare. Sheesh.

3 1/2 years ago our house in Woodside, CA burned while it was on the market.

I moved back to CA and as an owner-builder replaced everything except the foundation. Upgrades everywhere.

On April 24 we closed escrow on the house and are now permanent OR residents.

This has been a long uphill battle, but it is now behind us.

The final sale price was 49% higher than the listing price when the house burned, mostly due to upgrades.

Glad it worked out for you. Hope you made money on the deal considering the upgrades you installed. Enjoy Oregon:)

Dave, did you ever get settlement with the stupid real estate sales woman who lit candles for atmosphere and burned the place down? Probably you wouldn't know, but your insurance company surely subrogated against her. No matter what the outcome, I'm sure you would have more gray hair if you had any at all on top.;) Enjoy your life in Grants Pass. It's a beautiful spot.

You are correct, my insurance surrogated against her & her insurance. After legal fees, we got an additional $100k.

I haven't done the final accounting yet, but we had to put quite a bit of our own money into the rebuild. I am sure we made a profit of some sort, but I am going to rest for a while before I go through the records to see profit vs. loss. Of course part of whatever profit there might have been has to have my labor for 3.5 years deducted. I won't have any final accounting until uncle forces me to for 2012 taxes.

Funny thing is the real estate agent with the candle is the same one who we hired to sell it this time. She is our neighbor, the fire was an accident, and we had a good ending.

DW promised me a new hunting rig (which I already have, 2004 F250 diesel) a new dog (probably get a lab puppy in a month or so), a new computer (waiting for new Apple laptops in a few months), and a new rifle (looking at Browning auto loaders in .308), when the house sold. Doing my part for economic stimulus...

Congratulations!!! Nice to hear that all your hard work has paid off for you, and that you are now free and clear to move on and start living your life where you want to be.

It's sad to see what CA has become. I was born and raised there, and I saw it change from a state that I was proud of, to one that I feel sorry for, especially my friends who don't think it's possible to change their situation and go through life just surviving. It's a scary thing to move away and start all over again, but between just getting by and enjoying life, it's more then worth it.

Dave, congrats man!, you must feel light as a feather to have that off your mind. In this market, I would feel fortunate to just break even, or take a small loss for the gains you have overall.

We lived in San Bernardino when I was a small kid while my parents went to med school (Loma Linda). After going back last year for 2 weeks of work, didn't even remotely look like the California I remember. What I saw was "Change I could believe in":D

I left cali. 12 yrs ago, don't even miss it anymore.
I can't even think of moving back. Life is hard enough, to deal with the people running that state, just makes it harder. nancy pelosi, jerry brown can have the whole state to themselves.

Welcome or welcome back neighbor. Think I read your in Grants Pass. I'm out in the Applegate Valley. Made a carrier change and moved to southern Oregon from the bay area.

Great country to have the ability to make a good living and move were/when we want. Shame we have to put up with people with a different opinion. Seems the founders had a difference of opinion with the king at the time. lol
