Electricity rates

Even at my 11 cent/kwh rate, that is still only 30 whole whopping cents PER DAY for TEN ITEMS.

BUT at 30 cents per day is over $109 per year.

The same logic applies to corporations....charge the customer a few pennies extra per month and they won't really know or complain. Those few pennies add up to HUGE profits!

I also do a lot of other things to save money. Things I do to save money are not time hogs or very difficult but the modern times thinking they appear to be "conveniences" and are really not.

For example...I cut my own hair. Why should I pay $15 to buzz it with clippers?

Then people say...well I don't have the time to do that.

They will drive 15 min, wait 20 min, then get a cut for 15 min and drive home for another 15 min. Total time....over an hour. My time to buzz the hair....30 minutes (incl clean up and a shower).

My cost....free. I only paid $15 for the buzz trimmer kit. What is more of a convenience?

30 min or over an hour?

We make our own laundry soap too. That saves huge $$$ per year and takes me about 30 min to make a year supply. Only costs about $5 for a years supply.

Anyways, I digress too much. If you want to give away 30 cents per day be my guest...it is your money.

Pennies for thought.

Around here in Manitoba, Canada I pay about $0.677 per KWH and pay a $6.85 admin fee. The hydro utility has paid for me to spray foam my basement walls, bought me CFL bulbs and will pay for attic insulation, pipe wrap, etc. They do this so they can save me electricity so they can sell it south of the border for top dollar. Thanks for eating so much power and buying from Canada and keeping my bill low.

.

WOW, i like that. Around here your lucky if you can find a cost share program to payback 10-30% of a project i think. I got the fed tax credit of 10% for buying more insulation to put in the attic for above my bedroom. BUT free!!! Our rural coop the farm is on gave us like 2 free cfl bulbs but that was it. I have not got anything free yet from my main company, and as of yet i am the highest power price i think except the guy in california. Seems im getting hosed!!!!

My system runs anti virus scans at night, file updates, and backups.

I run Ubuntu Linux. A free OS and software. No virus' to worry about. They don't attack Linux boxes as they would get less than 1% of the computing public.

Also very few updates as it is not riddled with bugs.

Leaving the computer on does cost but you can get something for the price. My system runs anti virus scans at night, file updates, and backups. My system uses about 120 watts, do the math and presto!, it cost me $8.76 a month to run the PC. That is about 5-7% of our power bill. That is a good percentage of power use but worth it for me.

You may be able to have your computer go to sleep and wake up when its time to run those maintenance tasks. How you do it depends on your computer/os and what is starting those tasks. It won't be "completely" off, but it'll be a lot less than "completely" on :)

That may be a false sense of security.

These are just the updates for security - Ubuntu security notices | Ubuntu. Looks like about two every three days, on average.

And that 'they don't attack Linux' argument sounds like what Mac/apple users used to say

Its possible that Ubuntu is the best out there, but thats no excuse for dropping your guard because "it won't happen to me"

Everyone is missing the point...I never said to unplug your DVR box or washing machine/dryer.

I mentioned that I unplugged the TV/SAT boxes in guest rooms. Those don't record and are used but a few times a year but draw a lot of parasitic power.

Certain things don't draw power when plugged in. I doubt the washer/dryer draw when off unless they are new computer controlled units.

You can't wait 1 minute for your computer to boot up...Really? You in that much of a rush to surf TBN?

I don't really care what people leave plugged in but people always b**** about bills and we are giving solutions to combat it. If you choose then you pay but I'd rather eat out or get a new implement with that money.

BUT at 30 cents per day is over $109 per year.

Correct. But that was using HIS example with SEVERAL things. I only have ONE computer and ONE cable box. NO home phones, and only ONE alarmclock. So his 10item and 30 cents at MY rate, with me only having 5 items....its more like 15 cents oer day.

If you want to give away 30 cents per day be my guest...it is your money.

Pennies for thought.

And even so.. I dont look at it as "giving" away 15 cents or 30 cents per day.

I am mearly buying 15 cents or 30 cents worth of convience per day. And for me...its worth it. It may not be for others.

But all I know is when I get home and the little one wants to watch his cartoons before bed, he dont want to wait 15 minutes for the darn box to boot up when a few pennies to leave it on would have save the aggrevation.

And a few pennies to leave the computer in "sleep" mode so I can get on here (TBN) in SECONDS when I want and NOT several minutes while it boots up.

Im with you, we have not made our own soap yet but will. But i do cut my own hair. I bought my cutters for like $25 about 13 years ago and have not paid for a hair cut in at least 14 years. I have the wife dress up the ears n back every so often as well.

What makes me so angry is that most of our electricity in Louisiana is generated by natural gas and we supply most of the natural gas to the US.

Federal laws set the rate that we can sell gas to other states so they get cheap natural gas to make cheap electricity and have lower rates.

The gas suppliers can sell Louisiana gas for more money in Louisiana because there are no federal laws limiting the rates they can charge in this state so our electricity is higher than states hundreds of miles away that buy our gas.

All regulated by your state and its politicians who can be voted out of office. In Alaska the oil companies pay each resident. Try that in your state!

Alaskas winter is also the coldest state. Its to help subsistence residents who cant work 6 months of the year.
