Looking to replace my current tractor. I mow approx 4 acres, most of the property is slopping, large rocks and trees to mow around. I need 4WD and will use a 54" or 60" mowing deck. The only other attachment that I have need for is a blade for snow removal. Most of our snow is 6" or less and this past year I did no snow removal. I have looked at the JD1026 and the Kubota BX2360. I like both of those but the price of either one is higher than what I would like to spend. Not sure how much less a select series would be but for now would like some opinions.

I bought the x749 for the four wheel steering which works great and the lower center of gravity for slopes. Very satisfied with the machine overall. With the 3PH and 540 pto these are priced close to the 1023 and 1026R but it really depends on what your needs are to determine what to buy.

Just about everyone on TBN will suggest you get a fel on whatever you buy. I am in the minority here and don't feel the need for one on a lawnmower.

I wouldn't be afraid to look used either.

You can pick up a good used machine for 50 cents / 75 cents on the dollar depending on what you're looking for. Might not get the latest and greatest, but I picked up my 2305 last year, with a 140 hours on it for 1/2 the price of new and it had a FEL with it too.

The only reason why I didn't go with a Kubota was the 2 local dealers are... less then to be desired.

I would also strongly look at the Massy GC2300 if you have a dealer around for that.

Foxtrot,

HAHAHA good one. Everyone knows how strong John Deeres are for resale. There's no way any one could get a nice current or previous model for that kind of money. Crappy resale values like that are reserved for only the red and orange tractors. JMO.

To answer the original question: In regards to mowing, where you do not have a need for rear 540 PTO and 3PH, an X748se will trump the 1026R or BX 2660. The main reason is HFWD vs. MFWD. The HFWD of the X748se is always on and will "bind or scrub" less than the MFWD of a SCUT. The X748se would definitely make a better mower.
