I don't have a tooth bar, but I did get a Ratchet Rake for just under $300. As with most attachments or implements on TBN, the tasks at hand dictate the fondness for the equipment.
I dig rarely with my FEL, only loose bottomland dirt to enrich the yard and garden. Any FEL works. Toothbar not needed. I have a boxblade, but don't use it for digging either, just to smooth my long gravel drive (other implements would perhaps be better, but the BB is old and cheap).
Toothbars, like my Ratchet Rake, keep things from sliding off the bucket, and that makes them great for brush and sapling control. I have a big problem with that, so the rake was a great buy.
I don't think toothbars are overpraised, just appreciated by some with specific tasks they handle.
