PTO shaft broke

Is $160 more or less a normal price for a complete PTO shaft with slip clutch? I want to order ASAP, because it'll take a full 2-3 weeks to get here! Thanks

Actually, it's cheaper then most I've seen online (which have cost >$200 (US)).
Since it includes a slip clutch, it appears to be a real bargain.
Now, the downside...it's probably a Chinese import and likely a poor quality item.
Personally, I'd go for a better quality drive shaft, if at all possible.

What is a good brand? Could you recommend a site?

These look pretty decent:
PTO Shafts by Application

They're Italian manufacture. Price is about $170, but no slip clutch.

The only one I ever bought was at Tractor Supply...but that's in-store sales only.

The PTO drive shafts on both my mower and cutter are Italian...Caroni, I think.

Can you determine the manufacturer of the drive shaft you need to replace?

There is nothing written on this PTO shaft. All I know is that it is original to the Kodiak cutter.

Wouldn't it be better for me to order a 5 series PTO shaft instead of the 4 series that is stock for this cutter? As far as I see it, the only thing I need to pay attention to is that the ends are 1 3/8" 6-spline connectors. A 5 series shaft will be a lot stronger than the 4 series, correct?

I don't know for sure if they are that much stronger...maybe not worth the extra money involved.
I suggest you call them and explain your situation...a phone call from Panama may not be cheap though...e-mail may be a better alternative.

OK, thanks Roy. The website tells me the 5-series supports 60hp at 540rpm, and the 4-series supports only 35hp at 540rpm. I was thinking that since this shaft is in such bad condition, maybe my tractor at 75hp was too much for it. I will try to confirm this via email.

Another question, before you buy the drive shaft...your Kodiak cutter, what is the gearbox rating for it?
If the cutter gearbox is rated for less then your tractor's PTO HP, you may be moving the load from a (relatively) cheaper component (the drive shaft) to a more expensive component (the cutter or gearbox).
Just something to consider...

That's true. Better to break another shaft than the gearbox. Hadn't thought about that. Thanks

I just found out that the PTO shaft for $160 wouldn't even work....it's way too short. My min length is around 60" and the max length on that shaft is 58". Lucky I didn't order that one! I am looking here now: La Magdalena PTO Shafts LaMagdalena shafts from Spain.... quality should be good. Price is a lot more at $240 though.
