I've never personally had a malware infection, but my grandfather did on his laptop and getting the thing off was a bugger. Needless to say after that I downloaded Malwarebytes on my PC and laptop just to be safe!

They are getting more and more infectious these days.

I'm glad the people that write these viruses don't bother with Mac as much as they do with PC's.

Get ready... they know how gullible MAC owners have become from the past advertising.
Now with so many newer MAC owners putting Windows operating systems
on their machines so they can have some software beyond the basics the percentage is becoming more attractive to the hackers. You've also seen a lot more hacking in cross platform software like adobe reader and java lately.

We have Kaspersky at work and it has done well. Better than the version of Bitdefender it replaced, and when we have an issue, I can get in touch with their support people in ~15 minutes (we had absolutely no luck in getting support from Bitdefender once they had our money. Somehow a 600+ seat customer wasn't worth calling back to them and as such, we moved on).

I imagine you know the Java updates leave the old versions on your drive taking up worthless space as well as not eliminating the old bugs.

W-7 64 bit always fails on the automatic updates from Java on my machines but I like it that way. It reminds me there is a newer version, sometimes 1 a week lately because of the bugs, so I uninstall the old version and go to Java and let it search to tell me it is really gone. Then I install the latest version
directly from the site.

General comment

I personally think auto-installations lull one into a false sense of security.

These machines are tools, if your the one responsible for them, you should know what files and programs are being touched.

It is always just a matter of time in a thread about PC problems that someone with a Mac will jump in and report how they've never had problems....

Why aren't Macs the target for malware and virus attackers??? Its not because they are bullet proof. Its because the majority of the work of the world is not done on Macs. Art is done on Macs. Fun is done on Macs. There's no profit in attacking art and fun.

It can pretty much be gauranteed that if Macs would ever gain the majority market share of business and home PCs they will be attacked and penetrated heavily. However, that day will probably never come because as Mac devices like iPads and iPhones gobbly up market share the applications move towards web-based programs, where nothing but a dumb interface lives on the end-users' devices. There's about nothing to attack from the users' endpoint. The devices are basically slick interfaced dumb terminals.

The real trouble will start when hackers figure out how to penetrate the databases where all the users' web based data lives. That's the pot of gold.
