Check with your Internet service provider for security software. Our provider has security software for free download. I had a problem late last year on one home system. I forget the detail now so I can't remember why I uninstalled the service providers security software but I did and put on a different brand. I got hit with some malware as a result. I have backups but it still was a PITA and took days to fix.

Later,
Dan

I use Avast anti-virus. Completely free, and they update constantly (maybe 2 or 3 times a day). It's worked for me for many years.
I second the motion on Avast. I've used it for 3 years now and counting.
I also use 'SuperAntiSpyware'. It came highly recommended.

In addition to anti virus software I have also used " Spybots Search and Destroy" which is free, for many years. It finds worms and trojans that the commercial software doesn't at times.

Sorry for your problems. Actually Windows has an excellent security program built in, Windows Security Essentials (MSE).

.

WSE is what I have on my lap-top and so far has been flawless, I also keep Malwarebytes and CCleaner updated and run them about once a week.

Bitdefender is what I have on my desk-top, it too works well and is top rated. I will probably change the desk-top to WSE after my subscription expires if it continues to work and it's FREE!!

Multiple virus softwares running at the same time usually is not a good idea.
Many of the commercial versions will automatically shut off "Windows Defender" and other virus software automatically, so even though they are installed they are not working unless you manually turn them on.
They all hog some memory too, though not as bad as a few years ago.

on a netbook I can likely only afford 1 memory hog.. really.. processor power is mor ehte issue than memory. i upgrade dthe mem to max.. but the proc is still a N290 atom.. not quite a HP fiend...
