I spent a week at Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee crappie fishing the last week of April. I think my fifth time there. Crappie fishing is usually pretty good there but not this year. The fishing was good there during the warm spell in March but when it turned cold again in April it turned the fish off. Still, we had a good time there. Its been a weird spring this year.

I have been fishing trout on little pine lake in Lycoming county PA. The warm snowless winter has changed the lake, but I found the fish, 5 per day limit 40 fish in 8 days. A few storms chased me off for a few hours but the fishing is good

So what did you do with 40 fish? Smoke em, fry em, bake em?

Growing up in Western Montana we would often fish the creeks where they came down out of the mountains and into the valley. You could always get a good mess of pan-sized trout which are perfect for frying or smoking.

My friend Ben and I had driven up into the mountains a little ways, parked the truck and then started fishing a brushy and tree-filled strip of creek that paralleled the road but where most people wouldn't bother to go... good fishing holes. We fished for a while making our way up stream, this is tough fishing with the brush and you have to look for small holes or pockets that might hold some fish. These are running mountain streams where it might cascade a bit before the next hole where a tree fell etc., generally can't hear much except the creek. We were both wearing rubber boots so we wouldn't get too wet from the grass and could walk in the creek when needed. We got to a nice hole, I was on one side of the creek and Ben was on the other. We were there fishing probably a good ten minutes getting some bites and trying to tease some fish out from the brush roots etc. Suddenly not 25ft away a bear cub* fell out of a big pine tree. Ben and I locked eyes across the creek and the next thing I remember I was putting the key in the lock on the truck door and Ben was yelling at me to hurry up and get his door unlocked ;) Since running in rubber boots, knee-high grass and brush is about impossible, telportation is the only reasonable explanation I have been able to come up with on how we got back to the truck so fast :D

* Due to the grass we were unable to positively ID it as a bear cub but due to its size there really wasn't a long list of possibilities... either way we weren't going to investigate further. :)

Interesting tale, you gave me a good chuckle... a fitting end to a great day/weekend.

Thank you for sharing.

When I was 14 or 15 I helped the DNR kill off a lake and restock it a few months later with bass, bluegill and channel catfish. The first three fish I saw caught out of that lake through the ice the following winter was a perch a pike and a crappie!
