I hate my grease gun right now

I have found that the less expensive grease guns seem to give me the most problems. I don't by cheap guns anymore. My primary gun now is an 18v Snap-On gun, my back-up is a pistol grip gun I bought from the local Bobcat dealer that I paid about $30 for (I have had a couple of these with good results). As far as airlocks I have also found that making sure that the tubes of grease you are using aren't damaged, wrinkled, or crimped in anyway helps a lot. I have hired journeyman mechanics that did not know how to properly or easily load a grease gun until I showed them, so don't feel bad about the learning curve.

Air or electric guns are nice but until you get the feel of knowing if a fitting
or the area it is supplying grease to is really taking the grease as it should, I'd stay with the simple greasy hand operated gun.
Usually on a tractor a flexible rubber hose on the end of your gun becomes necessary to reach some fittings.
The safety shields on PTO shafts often need a needle attachment to grease their bushings.
Nothing like greasing.. At least you can't be overeating or texting while doing it:)

I gotta go wash my hands after reading this. My grandfather drove a dozer in an ore mine for a living. Every time the owner bought a new dozer my grandfather was the one to break it in. Everybody asks why he always got the new one and was told that he wasn't afraid of a grease gun.

He said you only do it once a day! Of course most of us don't do it but once a week or month. Still not my favorite job.

I've got a higher end Lincoln hand gun that does well but still gets greasy.
If you figure out a way to stay clean while greasing equipment please teach me.

It's REAL simple. I've got the Lincoln hand pump also. When I go to grease the equipment I make sure there are plenty of rags/ wipes available then CAREFULLY hand the gun to my son.

/edit - otherwise you've gotta get greasy.

That's the way I do it.

Gun was probably supplied with the plunger assembled for use of a bulk grease load. Turn the plunger cup around for use in cartridges.

I wish it was that simple, but this Deere gun doesn't have a reversible plunger (I have seen ones that do). The manual for the gun does suggest using grease in plastic tubes for better operation, but that's ridiculous -- most grease (including Deere's) still comes in cardboard. No matter though, I bulk load most of the time.

I had a friend who greased his truck and stayed clean. He had an approximately six foot long steel braided air line like those found on trucks attached to his grease gun. He then sent his 15 year old son to crawl around under the truck attaching the air line with fitting to all the grease Zerks while my friend stood beside the truck and pumped the gun.

Just invest in some latex gloves and you will keep the grease off of your hands. I bought a pneumatic grease gun, and it works well and saves you from manually pumping , but is equally as messy. It was worth the investment for me. Possibly someday they will make a sealed grease cartridge that you can just load, and toss when you are done, without pealing the foil away. If you do get the grease all over you clothes like I have, just use some Goop brand hand cleaner on them, and it will come out. As far as washing it off, like I have to do just about every day it seems, use a product with more grit like Fast Orange. Most of the grease resists water, so it is a pain to clean off.

That's a great idea. Every time they come up to visit (from Jacksonville, FL) I'll have the grease gun ready, if he's to wise to it maybe I'll get the grandson. He's gotta learn you know.;)

both mine are the tsc guns.. a pistol grip and a lever grip.. both work fine if you jump thru the hoops correctly.
