All the EPA regulations brought big changes to the industry of engine makers and fuel refineries. So what are people running in their tractors?
I have the JD 3520. Bought new in 2009. According to manual. Low sulfur diesel or untra low sulfur diesel fuel acceptable. Fine print to keep EPA happy, ultra low sulfur recommended. So since new I have run nothing but #1 ULSD on-highway fuel. No #2 died fuel!
One reason is just convience where I by it. The closest two local gas stations do not sell off-road diesel fuel. I know heating oil and #2 diesel fuel is the same stuff. See it all the at work with heavy equipment. I don't use heating oil for the house, so I don't by it. I just fill up fuel cans at the local gas station. I don't go out of my way for diesel fuel.
So, Pro's Con's of #1 vs. #2 fuel and LSD vs. ULSD?
I here many people complaining the new ULSD doesn't lubricate the injectors ow fuel pump well. It's hard on them.
One plus I can notice the exhaust from my tractor seems alot cleaner. No black soot. But I have nothing to really compare it to except other tractors of different models.
One reason I do like and don't mind paying the taxes on highway fuel is better fuel quality. Regardless of brand, just like gasoline, highway diesel fuel does have detergents and cleanings agents in it and in winter it has anti-jelling agents added to it. using #1 should make cold weather starting of a diesel easier. These highway truckers, seldom have starting troubles or fuel lines jelling anymore, unless it's absolutely brutal cold like -20 F or more. #2 diesel fuel lacks those additives.
I use only #1 ULSD maybe I'm wasting my money ?!
