Welding Up a Cracked Rim

DUDE !!!!!!!
Tube makes absoluty no difference. Do you know anything about Split Rims?? They are all tubed and also have a heavy Liner that goes against the rim.

After they are put together, for safety they are aired up in a safety cage. I have fixed lots of them and never had 1 blow. But do know folks that did.

The part of the rim that gets welded will not have the same temper as it originally did. Harder, softer, brittle, stronger, weaker ????? Who knows.

I would not want to stand beside that tire and rim at any time.

In my world DUDE is an insult. Maybe you want to change you tone and language.

Are we a little sensitive?

As for split rims the only time they "exploded" is when you were seating the tire on the rim. The force could cause the split part to jump over the rim lip. After the bead was seated they were as safe as any other tire, as will his rim after he welds it.

and his rim is not a 2 part split rim.. just a plain rim that will have a weld repair on it. like umpteen thousands of other tractor rims driging around out there day in and day out.

Will you just weld the dam thing so these guys will pull their panties out of their cracks and be done with it? Somebody is gonna get hurt on this thread. Sure, it's all fun and games til someone is bleeding.

Original rim construction was rolled steel & welded. Cannot believe that rim was heat treated after welding as this would increase strength (and brittleness) but not toughness.

Yeah, I agree. The toughness of the welded steel construction keeps
catastophic explosions from happening. This wheel is just like my
JD's one-piece welded wheel, not a 2-piece or split-rim.

I would weld it, but make it air-tight and go tubeless. Tubing it will
trap moisture and rust the wheel. It also means you can not plug leaks;
my front tires have multiple plugs.

I am a degreed welding engineer and I will just say cast iron and tool steel and some very thick steels require pre/post heat treat. Thats about it. Rims, air compressor tanks, even the gas pipelines that run 2000psi are not pre/post heat treated. Harder than mild steel but very weldable. I think rims are just mild steel as they bend quite easily. I agree with soundguy laugh, laugh.

If this cracked and broken rim was just mild steel and had no problems. Then how prey tell does the rim now have at least one visible crack that requires repair? There had to have been a metallurgical flaw, stress riser or fracture from cold working the steel. You can't have it both ways. As this rim is cracked due to some flaw. stress relief before and after welding will reduce further failures from stress cracks. Or some consideration has to be given towards the time and $$$ to repair a questionable rim now and maybe again in the future. Allowing also for the $$$ of lost production and risk of damage to the tire, tube and other components. Then also the risk of human injury of death. Now $189 for a new rim doesn't look expensive compared to a flawed rim.

you guys ar ekilling this topic. like a bunch of old women standing around a piece of buttered bread, butter side down, laying on the floor, all setting there ringing their hands and grousinge about how best to pick it up.

If the way you worry about this is any indication how you go thru and handle situations in the rest of your life. I fell for you... i really do.

weld it.. or if loosing serious sleep over it.. scrap it and make a fire ring out of it and replace the derned thing. my 31yr old blind horse could have handled this 'problem' by now.

:(

good grief...

gobal intelegence level is at a static point, yet population is continually growing... UGH!

Just to get my unqualified 2 cents in here, I would weld it and I would not tube it. I have welded up a couple of air compressors and they seemed fine, and that was with an old AC stick welder, I could do a heck of a lot better job now, And they are holding 130 lbs not 20 to 30. Weld up that puppy, and be done with it. I think the diesel mist leak check is probably a good idea. I think when you get it apart you will find the inside is rusted all to heck however in that spot,.. might take some real grinding and cleaning to get solid metal you can weld up. Good luck with it.

that's what 1/8 6011 and 100a is for.. :)

then electrolysis.. then wire wheel.. then epoxy prime and paint.. or por15 sealer.. :)

no more rust..and seals up good...
